This route was planned by komoot.
No, this is a challenging mountain bike tour designed for ambitious riders. It requires very good stamina and advanced riding technique due to significant elevation changes and technical sections. Beginners should look for easier routes in the Willingen area.
The trail is located near Willingen, which serves as a common starting point. You can find parking options in and around Willingen, often near the main tourist areas or designated trailheads. Specific parking details might vary, so checking local signage upon arrival is recommended.
The best time to ride the Willingen Trail Quartet No. 45 is typically from late spring to early autumn (May to October). During these months, the weather is generally more stable, and the trails are free of snow and ice, offering optimal riding conditions. Always check the local weather forecast before heading out.
Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to ride the Willingen Trail Quartet No. 45 or to access the Naturpark Diemelsee. However, always respect local regulations, especially concerning nature protection areas like the Neuer Hagen Nature Reserve, and stay on marked trails.
While dogs are generally allowed on trails in the region, this particular route is a demanding mountain bike trail. If you plan to bring your dog, ensure they are fit enough for the long distance and significant elevation. Dogs must be kept on a leash, especially in nature protection areas and near livestock, and you should always clean up after them. Consider if the technical sections and fast descents are suitable for your dog's safety and comfort.
The route offers a diverse and challenging terrain. You'll encounter a demanding interplay of partially rough and flowy sections. Expect significant climbs, root passages, and technical descents, including a 'blocked' (verblockte) section on the Biggestein-Downhill and steps in the final descent to Willingen. It's a true test of both technical skill and endurance.
The trail is rich with stunning landscapes and panoramic views. Key highlights include the Emmet Singletrack Trail, the View from Krutenberg (offering panoramas of Korbach and the Kellerwald), the Neuer Hagen Nature Reserve with magnificent views from Clemensberg, and the Langenberg Summit, the highest point in North Rhine-Westphalia. You'll also ride the High Eimberg Trail and pass the Aarbach Valley Trail and Kneipp Pool.
Yes, the route is part of a larger network and intersects with several other trails. You'll find yourself on sections of the Willinger_Trail_Quartett (which makes up 100% of this route), the Uplandsteig, and the Skisportstätten-Tour, among others. This integration into the broader Bike Arena Sauerland ensures well-maintained and controlled routes.
Given the trail's length and difficulty, carrying sufficient water and snacks is crucial. While the route passes through various areas, direct water refill stations or cafes might not be consistently available on the more remote sections. It's best to plan your stops in villages or towns along the route, such as Niedersfeld, or carry enough supplies for the entire duration. The Aarbach Valley Trail and Kneipp Pool might offer a refreshing stop.
For this demanding route, essential gear includes a well-maintained mountain bike suitable for technical terrain, a helmet, appropriate cycling apparel, and plenty of water and energy-rich snacks. A repair kit, spare tube, pump, first-aid kit, and a fully charged phone with the komoot app for navigation are also highly recommended. Given the varied terrain and potential for changing weather, layers of clothing are advisable.
The estimated duration for completing the Willingen Trail Quartet No. 45 is around 6 hours of active riding. However, this can vary significantly based on your fitness level, riding speed, and how many stops you make for breaks or to enjoy the panoramic views. Given its difficulty, allow ample time and start early in the day.
Varied tour around Willingen. High proportion of trails and everything from flowing to rooty/blocky. The climbs are rewarded with wonderful views. Bike-Arena has put together a really nice tour: https://www.bike-arena.de/de/neusta-touren/mtb-willinger-trail-quartett-nr.-45
Due to the lack of a network, 3km and 300 meters in altitude are missing. We chose a different starting point and left out Willingen. The original is available at Bike Arena Sauerland Tour 45. In the end, we fought harder than ever against felled trees. That's what happens when you don't take warning signs seriously ...
A super nice and varied tour, with beautiful paths and some crisp single trails. It may not be entirely suitable for absolute beginners, but you can also push the bike a few meters if you have to. There are also enough restaurants and huts along the way where you can take a break. The tour can either be shortened or extended depending on taste and physical condition. Definitely a thumbs up.
Beautiful tour around Willingen with many meters of altitude. And always sat firmly in the saddle 🐎.
