This route was planned by komoot.
Yes, the Kuckucksbähnelweg is a varied circular route. It leads from Elmstein towards Iggelbach and then back to Elmstein, offering diverse environments and views of both villages.
The trail commences at the Kuckucksbahnhof (Kuckuck train station) in Elmstein. You can find parking facilities there, making it a convenient starting point for your hike.
The Kuckucksbähnelweg is easily accessible via public transport. There are connections available through Lambrecht and Elmstein, allowing you to reach the trailhead without a car.
The trail primarily traverses natural paths and trails through a varied mixed forest landscape. You can expect ascents that start moderately and become steeper in sections. The path may have unevenness, roots, stones, or holes, especially when fallen leaves obscure them in autumn. After heavy rainfall, some sections might be muddy and slippery, requiring surefootedness.
As a 'Prädikatswanderweg' (premium hiking trail), the Kuckucksbähnelweg guarantees a high-quality hiking experience. This includes well-maintained paths, clear signage, and diverse, scenic landscapes. It integrates historical sites and unique natural monuments, ensuring a rich and engaging journey.
The Kuckucksbähnelweg offers a beautiful experience throughout the year. However, be aware that in autumn, fallen leaves can obscure uneven terrain, and after heavy rainfall, some sections may become muddy and slippery. Spring and summer offer lush greenery, while autumn provides vibrant colors.
Along the route, you'll encounter several notable landmarks. These include the Elmstein Castle Ruins, old knight stones (Rittersteine), and natural formations like the 'Hohe Buche' and the Heinrich-Weintz lime tree. You'll also pass the Kuckucksbähnel Terminus and Tourist Information at the start.
Yes, the Kuckucksbähnelweg is dog-friendly. However, to protect wildlife and the natural environment, it is important to keep dogs on a leash throughout the trail.
Yes, the trail offers ample resting opportunities. You'll find numerous benches and picnic areas, such as Schützen-Hecke, conveniently located along the route. There are also refreshment stops available in Iggelbach, which the circular path passes through.
No, you do not need a permit or have to pay an entrance fee to hike the Kuckucksbähnelweg. It is freely accessible to the public.
Due to its natural character, be prepared for potential unevenness, roots, stones, or holes on the path. These can be particularly obscured by fallen leaves in autumn. After heavy rainfall, some sections may become muddy and slippery, so surefootedness is advised, especially in areas where rocks or cliffs are not secured.
Yes, the Kuckucksbähnelweg intersects with several other trails. The route also passes through sections of the Pfälzerwald Gelb-Weißer Balken, Pfälzer Hüttensteig, and the Jakobsweg Speyer – Metz, among others.
After a week of almond blossoms in the Vorderpfalz region and lots of people, I was craving some forest and peace and quiet today. I got both. In my opinion, the loop needs improvement. The paths are often wide, though not graveled. From the viewpoint above Iggelbach (at km 7.5), I would take the high trail over the Kurzeneck. This saves you a good stretch of forest highway. Otherwise, everything is easy to walk. Compared to the Vorderpfalz region, the forest is still in a deep sleep. I really enjoyed it.
A certified hiking trail from the internet. Highlights/more noteworthy today: - Remains of Elmstein Castle - Rafting facility (a stop on the Rafting Adventure Trail) - Ehrenfels - Memorial to the district forester Stumpf - Rest area at the Mirabelle tree - Hohe Buche Paths: Many narrow paths, the slightly wider ones with mostly natural ground. After Iggelbach, walk along the bench with a view of Iggelbach over the ridge. This way you avoid a section of wide forest path. The paths are sometimes so narrow on the slope that I advise against walking in the snow. Places to stop: - Restaurants in Iggelbach - Waldtante https://www.facebook.com/people/Zur-Waldtante/100049723670867 Places to rest (table and benches): After approx. 5.5 km at the Mirabelle tree, just before and after Iggelbach (approx. 9 and 9.5 km respectively) Parking: easily possible in Elmstein on Bahnhofstrasse.
Start in Elmstein parking lot Möllbachstraße Stop in Iggelbach at the forest aunt
Our starting point was Elmstein - Harzofen and in order to get to the start of the actual circular route, we surprisingly had to climb a few meters in altitude on almost overgrown hiking trails in order to get to Elmstein first. In the middle of the village, the first steep ascent led high above the village with a great view of Elmstein and the Elmstein castle ruins. To get further to the Ehrenfelsen, you walk a good distance above the road that winds through the valley, which you finally cross at an interesting station on the history of water use in the Palatinate Forest. The Ehrenfelsen is an extraordinary rock formation that invites you to linger and enjoy the wonderful view.
Today we went to Elmstein with dear Petra ☺️. I discovered the local owl tour. Since Petra had little time, I changed the tour a bit 😅 The tour is not marked, it is a combination of 4 new circular routes. https://www.outdooractive.com/mobile/de/route/wandern/pfalz/elmstein-eulenweg/110961175/ The paths are mostly wide forest paths, but there were still a few nice sections. What we really liked were the views, even if the weather wasn't the best.☺️. An entertaining tour on which we only met a few hikers Oh and finally I found some tree beads again ☺️ Good that we were home early, a heavy thunderstorm came down 🤓
