This route was planned by komoot.
This moderate hike usually takes around 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete. This duration can vary depending on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the scenery or explore points of interest.
The route offers a diverse and engaging experience. You'll encounter a rich tapestry of natural environments, including marsh, moorland, forests, river valleys, and geest areas with sand dunes and heathland. The landscape is generally gently undulating, with some unexpected hilly sections for the North German lowlands. Paths are typically well-signposted.
The trail combines natural beauty with cultural history. You can explore the historic Henckemühle Watermill, the ancient Heiliger Berg Bronze Age Burial Mound, and the serene Pond in Heiligenloh. The route also showcases diverse landscapes like heathland, ancient trees, and picturesque avenues.
Classified as a moderate hike, this route requires a reasonable level of fitness due to its distance and potentially uneven ground. While not overly strenuous, it's more challenging than very easy paths. Families with older children who are used to walking longer distances should find it enjoyable, but it might be too long for very young children.
Specific parking details for this exact 'Discovery tour' can vary. However, the Wildeshauser Geest Nature Park generally provides well-developed access points and parking areas near popular trailheads. While the nature park is well-connected by roads, public transport options directly to specific trailheads within the Wildeshauser Geest Nature Park might be limited. It's advisable to check regional bus schedules or train connections to nearby towns like Wildeshausen or Twistringen and then plan for a short taxi ride or a walk to the starting point of the trail. For more detailed information, you might consult local transport websites.
Yes, the Wildeshauser Geest Nature Park generally welcomes dogs on its trails. However, it's crucial to keep your dog on a leash at all times to protect local wildlife and ensure a pleasant experience for all hikers. Please also remember to clean up after your pet.
The Wildeshauser Geest Nature Park offers changing charm with each season. Spring brings blooming flora, summer offers lush greenery, and autumn provides beautiful fall colors. For comfortable hiking temperatures and to experience the diverse landscapes at their best, late spring to early autumn (May to October) is generally recommended. Winter hiking is possible but be prepared for colder weather and potentially muddy or icy conditions.
No, there are typically no entrance fees or permits required to access the trails within the Wildeshauser Geest Nature Park. The park is committed to making its unique natural landscape accessible to the public. However, specific attractions or facilities within the park might have their own charges.
Yes, this route intersects with several other trails, offering opportunities to extend your hike or explore different areas. You'll find sections that overlap with the Twistringer Erlebnisroute Archäologie, the Brückenradweg Ostroute, and parts of the StadtLandMoorgeflüster trail, among others.
To fully appreciate the unique blend of natural beauty and cultural history, consider taking some time to explore the ancient megalithic tombs and historical sites scattered throughout the park. These relics of once-dominant heathland offer a fascinating glimpse into the region's past and are often found in particularly scenic spots.
The cycling season is practically over. As a change of pace, the hiking season is now beginning. Let's see what the future holds.
So beautiful :) In perfect hiking weather, seven cheerful LandArt hikers set out on a hike around Heiligenloh. The sun accompanied us along country lanes and shady paths, past a vibrant sunflower field. Ripe fruit along the trail beckoned us to snack on – so we spontaneously picked apples and plums along the way. After the leisurely hike and a few adversities with a broken fan belt, the day ended in a relaxed atmosphere in Twistringen, where everyone treated themselves to a well-deserved ice cream. A thoroughly successful day of hiking!
We were on a tour of discovery near Heiligenloh. This can be taken figuratively as well as literally. Because the discovery tour is also the name of another tour from the series of the Wilde Geest on foot. Tip: https://www.tberg.de/wanderregion-wilde-geest/ There is really a lot to discover on the tour! So .. off to new adventures! The tour takes us through the Wilde Geest around Heiligenloh. By the way, Heiligenloh is the "most beautiful village" in the district of Diepholz - it has even won an award! It starts directly at the parking lot at the parish garden. Already here we admire the evangelical church with the old cemetery. We see ancient and beautifully restored farmsteads and buildings. We pass the Henckemühle, idyllically situated on the Beeke, and hike along the Beeketal through alder swamp forest. After the gray days we have sun today - unbelievable. The birds also notice this and sing twice as loud. It really won't be that long until spring. We walk on the Ellinghäuser Kirchweg, one of the most beautiful hiking trails in Heiligenloh. For us it goes on, accompanied by sun and birdsong along the deciduous forest area "Harms Holt". There are still mighty beeches here. Hopefully they can grow for a few more decades. Passing fields we reach the Holy Mountain. Here we discover a large burial mound from the Bronze Age. Various tools from this period were found here during excavations. One of the stones that appears to have surrounded the grave bears an inscription commemorating a farm takeover in 1834. This is where history meets. We enjoy the peace and the rays of sunshine here with a small snack break. When there is no wind, the sun shows its strength. Our path continues in an arc through fields and fields back in the direction of Heiligenloh. We pass a biogas plant and various farms. OK, agriculture has its place too. Unfortunately, the path leads from the Hespe patch over a paved road until we turn back into the Beeketal. The Heiligenloh traffic and beautification association has created a biotope here in which animals and plants can feel at home. Soon we are back at the church at the parking lot, the starting point of our hike. Highlights of the tour: - Church of Heiligenloh - Erlenbruchwald in the Beeketal - Ellinghaeuser Kirchweg - Deciduous Forest "Harms Holt" - Holy mountain with tumulus - Biotope in the Beeketal
After a hearty breakfast, we set off from the village community center in Heiligenloh. The route is very varied and truly lives up to its name. We discovered a lot. In the afternoon, we drove to our new location, south of Wildeshausen, and will do another hike there tomorrow 🥾🥾☀️ It's absolutely wonderful. Some of the photos 📸📸 are from last night...the order is a bit mixed up 😊
The tranquil little town of Heiligenloh as a starting point surprises with its beautiful, wild romance. Not obvious, but more to be discovered. It is worth walking slowly and admiring the lovingly restored houses of all sizes. The forest sections are often close to nature and take you back to another time... fairytale writers would be delighted. I met so many nice people along the way who 'stopped' me for a quick chat and Hachiko even got me some tasty treats 🐕 Short sections are a bit boring, but they are supposed to counteract the sensory overload 😉 Nice route that we would probably do the other way round again.
Discovery tour of Heiligenloh (Twistringen) in the Wildeshauser Geest 😍 Very nice hike around Heiligenloh including a Bronze Age burial mound. A lot on the edge of the forest, quiet and not very asphalted. Unfortunately only possible to stop for refreshments on Sundays at Haus Bollweg. Coffee to go at Edeka Humpe right on the route. Lots of opportunities to linger. Definitely worth it!
A really “worth going” tour with lots of beautiful impressions. The exception, however, was the southwest corner, where there is a large "bio" gas plant. When Cookie and I passed there, the huge tractors with trailers full of chopped corn raced along every three minutes. Fittingly, there were lots of cornfields around it. You can see it on the map, it's where I didn't take any photos... Otherwise we liked it.
Very nice round. However, I strongly recommend not following the Komoot guideline, but following the "Wilde Geest Discovery Tour" signposts. Although they match 90%, the remaining stretches of the Gesst trail are worthwhile.
