This route was planned by komoot.
The High village hike is considered a moderately difficult circular trail. While komoot rates it as 'moderate' with an elevation gain of approximately 250 meters over 13.7 kilometers, local descriptions often highlight it as a more challenging route due to varied terrain, including hollow lanes, and a total ascent/descent that can feel more significant. Good physical fitness and sturdy footwear are recommended.
Given its moderate to challenging nature and length of nearly 14 kilometers, this hike might be demanding for very young children or absolute beginners. It's best suited for hikers with some experience and good physical condition. There are many other family-friendly options within the Geo-Nature Park Bergstraße-Odenwald if you're looking for an easier stroll.
The trail encircles the idyllic high village of Bullau, which serves as an excellent starting point. You can typically find parking options within or on the outskirts of Bullau. Specific parking areas are usually well-marked for hikers.
The High village hike is estimated to take around 3 hours and 50 minutes to complete. However, this duration can vary based on your pace, the number of stops you make to enjoy the views, and whether you explore any of the highlights in more detail.
This route offers a blend of natural beauty and cultural history. You'll encounter geological features like the 'Rutschstein' and the fascinating Ebersberg Rock Sea. The trail also passes the Bullauer Bild Wayside Shrine and provides opportunities to enjoy panoramic views from spots like the Bench with a view of the Odenwald fields.
Yes, the trail is known for offering 'very high' panoramic views, especially over the rolling Odenwald fields. The Bench with a view of the Odenwald fields is a specific highlight designed for enjoying these vistas.
Generally, hiking trails in the Geo-Nature Park Bergstraße-Odenwald are dog-friendly. However, it's always advisable to keep your dog on a leash, especially when passing through agricultural areas, near wildlife, or on busier sections of the trail. Please ensure you clean up after your pet.
The High village hike can be enjoyed in various seasons. Spring brings blooming orchards and fresh greenery, while autumn offers vibrant fall foliage. Summer is pleasant, especially in the shaded forest sections, but can be warm. Winter hiking is possible, but check local conditions for snow or ice, as some sections might become slippery.
No, there are typically no entrance fees or permits required to hike on public trails within the Geo-Nature Park Bergstraße-Odenwald, including the High village hike. However, always respect local regulations, stay on marked paths, and protect the natural environment.
Yes, the High village hike is part of a network of trails in the region. It fully encompasses the Rundwanderweg Bullau Bu1: Bullauer Rundweg and also shares sections with the Nibelungensteig - Variante Erbach, Rundwanderweg Bullau 7, and the main Nibelungensteig, among others. This offers opportunities to extend or modify your hike if desired.
The trail circles the village of Bullau, and the broader Odenwald region has various guesthouses, restaurants, and cafes. It's a good idea to check in advance for opening hours, especially in smaller villages, or pack your own provisions for the hike.
Fantastic sections; mostly shady, also doable on warmer days; some sunny sections; sun protection, tick protection sometimes up to hip height. Possibility to stop for refreshments in Bullau https://www.cafe-best.de/
...a short loop in the Odenwald highlands on the Nibelungensteig trail, mostly on older forest roads or trails, occasionally on gravel paths suitable for small-scale, tractor-assisted forestry work, hardly any roads for today's heavy machinery... lovely! There were one or two "descents" from the "high ground" into the flat, rather soggy valley, the rest on fairly level ground, so a leisurely stroll today... along the source of the Euterbach stream, which later, who would have guessed, flows into the Eutergrund valley, it was quite a soft walk... a logger had probably been at work there recently, and the damp ground added to the effect... I think it's nicer here in summer... but otherwise... a charming tour that would still be manageable even after Christmas dinner... hohoho
Bullau is a district of Erbach and lies lonely at a good 500 m altitude on an open plateau. On Dorfstrasse you can park your car in the parking lot specially set up for the hiking trail. When I got out of the car, it was only 10° despite the sun (already 14° down in Erbach) and a cold wind was blowing. But I quickly got warm from running. The Bu1 marking is good with one short exception. Sections run together with the Nibelungensteig, or a variant. If you walk clockwise like I did, you first have to go back a bit to the town center and then left onto the dirt road through the meadow orchards and fields to the edge of the forest. From there you can see Bullau on the horizon. After turning right twice, it now goes left through the forest, slowly descending to the slide stone, which is located on a sharp bend in the path. It is a large rock with a flat, steep face, the peculiarity of which is a kind of "slide" slide in the middle. Now it goes slightly uphill to the hamlet of Gebhardtshütte and behind it to the left to the Ebersberger Felsenmeer. According to information on the signpost, the named place is still 7 km away. The hiking trail continues down through the middle of the rocks to the main path and then to the right. But you can't get to the "beverage kettle" anymore, you have to follow its hint in the other direction. Soon it's going diagonally right again slightly uphill through the forest in the direction of Bullauer Bild, which you reach after almost 3 km and crossing the district road and passing the car park of the same name. The wayside shrine was erected at an old crossroads of trade and pilgrimage routes and re-erected in the wooden octagon in 2014. Previously, over time, it had grown into a beech tree that had to be pruned due to fungal attack. The shrine fell out and broke. Now you could hike the yellow inverted T directly to the Bullauer Eutergrund, but I continued to follow the wayside shrine, past the "Schluckspecht" hut with the wooden hammock (in the bird house there is a % and a cash register), then briefly irritated because the missing marking through the felled trees (you have to follow the curve slightly to the right between them, but then straight ahead without taking any of the junctions) and then comes down to the Diebsgrund. I haven't seen such a natural idyll with rushing waters, total peace and solitude, despite the few houses, some of which were dilapidated, and wide views for a long time. Water flows and murmurs everywhere. The Euterbach behind the information board with the wooden signposts forms the border with Bavaria. The Wü3 runs along this north-east to the Römerbad near Würzberg and the Limes hiking trail. However, I am back in the direction of Bullau, past the bubbling lion fountain and at the last house to the left, the short but steepest climb of the entire tour, up to Bullau, where I end the tour in Café Best in the beer garden with a delicious homemade lemon and pineapple cake have. The menu with the non-sweet dishes also looks very tempting. However, I don't understand why, given the numerous regional breweries, you have to have beer carted in from the Allgäu. On the whole hike I met nobody until almost the end, my companions were the constant wind and the murmuring forests and later also murmuring water. Just beautiful.
Very nice route! Not too difficult but with beautiful views.
