The Dollbergschleife Dream Loop is approximately 11.4 kilometers (7.1 miles) long. Most hikers complete the trail in about 4 hours, though your pace and stops for sightseeing will influence the total time.
The trail offers a diverse and engaging terrain. You'll encounter a mix of natural paths (about 56%), lightly paved sections (around 43%), and a small amount of asphalt. While generally considered moderate, some parts can be steep, challenging, and potentially slippery, especially in wet conditions. Good surefootedness is recommended, particularly on climbs like the one over rocks to the Celtic ring wall.
This route is rich in both natural beauty and historical significance. Key highlights include the impressive Celtic Ring Wall Otzenhausen (Hunnenring), one of Europe's most significant prehistoric fortifications. You'll also pass the Dollbergquelle Minibar, the historic Züscher Hammer (a reconstructed water-powered hammer mill), and enjoy scenic views of the Nonnweiler Reservoir. Don't miss the Benches overlooking the Nonnweiler Dam for a great photo opportunity. The trail also leads to the Dollberg, the highest point in Saarland.
The official Start of Dollbergschleife Trail is a common access point. Parking is typically available near the Celtic Ring Wall Otzenhausen, which is a popular starting point for the loop. It's always a good idea to arrive early, especially on weekends, to secure a spot.
Yes, the Dollbergschleife Dream Loop is generally dog-friendly. However, given the varied terrain with some steep and potentially slippery sections, ensure your dog is accustomed to such conditions. Always keep your dog on a leash, especially within the National Park area and near wildlife, and remember to pack out any waste.
No, you do not need a permit, and there are no entrance fees to hike the Dollbergschleife Dream Loop or to access the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park. The park is freely accessible to visitors. However, please respect all local regulations, especially regarding litter, noise, and staying on marked paths to protect the natural environment.
The Dollbergschleife Dream Loop is beautiful year-round, but the best times are typically spring (April-May) when nature awakens, and autumn (September-October) for vibrant fall colors. Summer offers pleasant hiking, though some sections can be exposed. Winter hiking is possible, but be prepared for potentially icy or snowy conditions, especially on steeper parts, requiring appropriate gear and caution.
Yes, the route shares sections with several other trails. You'll find it intersects with parts of the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig, the North South Trail, Section Erbeskopf - Saarschleife, and the European long distance path E3 - part Germany. It also briefly crosses the Via Sancti Martini HW-39-11 Börfink - Nonnweiler and the Saarland-Rundwanderweg.
While there aren't many formal restaurants directly on the trail, you'll find the Dollbergquelle Minibar, which offers a self-service option for drinks. It's always advisable to carry enough water and snacks for your hike, especially since the trail takes around 4 hours to complete. More extensive facilities can be found in nearby towns.
The trail is classified as 'moderate' and features varied terrain, including some steep and rocky sections. While older children who are experienced hikers and have good stamina might enjoy it, it might be too challenging for very young children or those unaccustomed to longer, more demanding hikes. Consider the 4-hour duration and elevation changes when planning a family outing.
For a truly immersive experience, consider starting your hike early in the morning. This allows you to enjoy the tranquility of the Start of Dollbergschleife Trail and the Celtic Ring Wall before crowds arrive, and you'll have ample time to explore the historical sites and viewpoints without feeling rushed.
Beautiful, varied and informative circular hike that begins at the impressive Celtic Wall and ends at the dam. You can stop off at the café at the end point, and there is a self-service drinks stand along the way.

We started this dream loop at the Otzenhausen forest car park, so the tour greeted us with a highlight, the Celtic ring wall. The subsequent path through the forest over the Dollberg is also very beautiful. Back in the valley then some culture with the Zülscher Hammer, a water-powered forge and a few ruins around it. The path along the reservoir, on the other hand, is a bit boring, or worded positively, offers space for meditation and exchange of ideas.
This tour wasn't quite as long as usual today, but it had a lot to offer. Very interesting Celtic structures, such as the Züscher Hammer and the absolute highlight of the tour, the Hunnenring. There are also beautiful views of the Nonnweiler Dam. Finally, there is the highest point in Saarland, the Dollberg summit (almost 700 m high). There is a spooky atmosphere there in the autumn with a light fog. Lots of great subjects for the camera.
I saw Tour at Mone. Very nice tour, the absolute highlight is probably the ring wall of Otzenhausen and the Dollberg spring. There is any spring water you could wish for, just not for free. 🤓
Halfway along the route, there's a very informative museum and a Celtic village to visit. The bistro offers a great place to refuel after your hike and cultural experience.
Today we were on a summit tour: at 695.4 meters we reach the highest elevation in Saarland: the Dollberg! And with the great snow, it's a real winter experience. It goes past the Altbach (Königsbach), here the cold has turned the small waterfalls into icicles. The Nonnweiler reservoir appears on the right next to us. Further up we reach the ring wall of Otzenhausen, and it is one of the most impressive prehistoric fortifications in Europe. For us it was a very beautiful, wild, snowy hike. 😀 Info: https://www.outdooractive.com/de/route/wandern/saarland/traumschleife-dollbergschleife/2806160/#dmdtab=oax-tab1 Sonny Terry. The dream loop was very nice. There you are at the Dollberg at the highest point in Saarland. It doesn't have that many meters of elevation 🤣 Towards the end, the soles of my daughter's shoes came off and we spontaneously drove to Decathlon in Neunkirchen. It doesn't help, you need proper shoes for hiking 🥾
