This route was planned by komoot.
The route started at the Fischerberghaus, but you can also "get on" at the WildenWaldWeg (Merchingen) or in the Mühlental (near the Fremersdorf train station). The pure walking time was about 5.5 hours. The route is very varied and leads through many meadows, fields and forests. There are small streams as well as fantastic far-reaching views. Sometimes the grass is very high at the moment and narrows the paths a lot, every now and then I would have wished for a machete today 😆 There are enough rest areas. Today we started very early to "take" the sunrise 😀.
Not a good option in midsummer, but a scenic and varied route at any other time of year (except ice and snow). You should be in good physical shape because of the length and the altitude. The start was at the Fischberghaus in Saarfels.
I'm not quite sure about this tour whether I like it or not... There are plenty of views‼️ You feel like you can see the whole of Saarland! 🤩 The *Bietzerberger* was changed - contrary to the information in Komoot. The route through the forest was replaced by meadows with a view. So we followed the new route, which wasn't so suitable given the sultry temperatures 🥵. Luckily it was overcast, otherwise it would have been like eating a roast chicken. I think the best time for this tour is May/June, when the meadows are in bloom and the fields that we passed at the beginning are full of life and strength and not, like now, already harvested. After wet paths along the Ohligsbach, we reached the fields and meadows on top with a view. Then a huge apple orchard. Then a section on the "Wilde.Wald.Weg", which I really liked. The warning about breaking branches didn't interest me, but it was repeated several times. I wonder if the town of Merzig changed the route for the sake of hikers...🤷🏻♀️, I would have preferred to go through the forest today. OK, after the advertised but orchid-free meadows, the forest came into play again, nice from the Fischerberghaus with a stop (it was closed, but certainly a good place with a view) and on the Katzenberg. We ended up back in Menningen via winding paths with hidden bunkers and a lime kiln (?) - not visited, it was thundering again after the previous rain ☔️🌧️. We skipped the loop through the Mühlental... too humid and stormy 🥵🌩️⚡️. MY conclusion: The whole thing was a bit long-winded... or rather, the time was wrong.
Once you have found the starting point, it is a sporty, beautiful and varied hike. The route itself is very well signposted, but the approach is not so good.
We got a little lost once... otherwise a beautiful, long autumn hike... we started in the morning at 9°C... the fishing hut was open, but it was still too early for us... leaves were falling and rustling underfoot... beautiful views and two ominous mountains... saw horses and cows... the paths along the water were the most beautiful 😁
Went this premium hiking trail again today and it still makes sense to go there even though the "Ökofriek" have spoiled the stories of the rich Mühlental. Bonne. Rando 🙋🏻♂️
My father is from Menningen, so what could be more obvious than hiking the Bietzerberger? A beautiful premium hiking trail with many viewpoints. But you really shouldn't hike it until autumn, when the temperature is below 30 degrees, because not all sections of the trail go through the forest. Today the weather was perfect for this tour, not too warm, but still clear visibility for the viewpoints.
