Trail Reviews

Wander Woman Rita
November 1, 2025, Drei-Gipfel-Wanderung in Masserberg

A three-peak hike sounds exciting! So, we and our friends are ready and eager to conquer the peaks. We start our tour in the morning, actually with a bit of sunshine. The trails became increasingly adventurous, as we constantly had to overcome fallen trees or streams. In the late afternoon, the predicted thunderstorm arrived. It would have been too good to be true to finish a hike dry for once! Now it became really slippery and icy. It's a good thing we arrived safely in the late afternoon. It seems we missed the three peaks altogether.

Bad weather reports can't deter us - and then they were right. The starting point of our hike over three peaks was in Fehrenberg. First via Heubach and Schnett up to Simmersberg. The youth hostel was barely visible in the fog. Continue to Höheberg in a former forest, now lunar landscape and then a very beautiful path (Gießübler Schweiz), with rock groups Schrödersfelsen, Nadelöhr and Langertsfelsen. However, it was really pouring.... Continue towards Masserberg and!!! The sun still came out and made everything beautiful even more wonderful. At the Eselsberg we went to the Rennsteigwarte and really enjoyed the sunny view and the all-round panorama. Final stretch down through the idyllic Eselsgrund along babbling streams back to the starting point. A great hike - but the trees are very frightening. Everything has been cut down on a large scale and what is still standing is also broken. Craziness. They are already reforesting, but these huge areas have to recover themselves. Thuringia🫶

I've been wanting to go to the Werra spring for a long time. I looked on Komoot to see what tours were suggested. 🤓 I found the "Three Peaks Hike in Masserberg" very appealing, so I modified it slightly to actually get to the spring. I didn't really notice the three peaks on the tour 🤔 Maybe it was the fog or the missing summit cross, I don't know. 🤷🏻‍♂️😂

With the sun rising on the horizon, a very quiet, balanced round with little traffic on the route began near Masserberg. After a short accompaniment of the well-known white R, we headed to the Ersteberg refuge in the morning mood to explore new paths from there, away from the Rennsteig. With a great view from the Langertfelsen under a cloudless sky, the bottleneck followed. A short detour to the Mini Dachsbach waterfall required a bit of elevation. Good thing. The end of the first section was marked by the Dachsbachkanzel, then it was off into open terrain. First a bit of road, to the Heubach ski arena, then on a forest path lined with countless cleared cubic meters of spruce wood to Schnett. There, a lost place with its aura of bygone times surprises, an old forest pool. And because it was so beautiful, a little later in Heubach, the next forgotten and abandoned place follows, an open-air stage. Once you're back on a nature trail to Fehrenbacher Grund, you follow a stretch with little path and lots of undergrowth to Fehrenbach, from where a path leads through Eselsgrund. Lost in dreamy hiking mode, suddenly startled by a deer, the Werraquelle is announced on signposts. After a quick snack, back on the Rennsteig, you head up to the Rennsteigwarte again. At a height of 38 meters, you can let your gaze wander to the horizon and maybe even beyond.

There were several reasons for this particular hike. The Werra is our "home river" and we often travel down it in a folding boat. We have already been to Masserberg for running and mountain biking and we once spent a weekend in Schnett with our dance friends. The Thuringian Forest is a real gem for hiking. Do we need any more reasons?!? 😉 As soon as we arrived at the hiking car park in Fehrenbach, it was already jam-packed and we had to squeeze our car right to the edge of the car park. We laced up our hiking boots and started our tour with a real highlight - the Eselgrund. This is a wonderful, narrow hiking trail along a stream that took us steadily higher. At the end of it, the valley opened up and a gravel path led us to the Sommerberg. From here it was a stone's throw and we reached the Werra spring. There is not much going on there in the morning, so we cooled off briefly with spring water and then hiked along a forest path until we finally reached the Rennsteig at the Heidehütte. We headed towards Masserberg and wanted to leave the Rennsteig at the Gutheil Schoder Weg. Unfortunately, we had to turn around again because there was no way through here due to forestry work. Unfortunately, we were not able to visit the tower at the Rennsteigwarte today because we hadn't thought of coins for the machine and unfortunately it doesn't accept notes. 🤷🏼‍♂️ We reached the sports field via a forest path, which has now been converted into a winter sports park. We crossed the residential area of Masserberg and left the town on the Rennsteig. We continued past the ski lift and left the Rennsteig again at the Esteberg. Our next destination was the Langertfelsen, which offers a beautiful view over the Thuringian Forest. From there, we used a narrow hiking trail that led us past the Nadelöhr, the Schröderfelsen and the Dachsbachkanzel through the Giesübler Schweiz. We always walked along the slope, sometimes up, sometimes down, and small streams kept crossing the hiking trail. North of Heubach, this wonderful path unfortunately came to an end. We walked a short distance along the country road, turned right at the ski area and reached the Simmersberg via a long forest path, where we laid out our forest buffet. We have rarely experienced a place that was so quiet - beautiful! A meadow path led us downhill to Schnett. We then passed the lost place "forest swimming pool" and further past the St. Wolfgang Chapel until we heard music above Heubach. When we arrived in the town, a concert by the South Tyrolean "Ladiners" was taking place in the town center. We didn't stop, walked past the church, across the old cemetery and past the next lost place, an open-air stage and an overgrown mini golf course. We left Heubach at the school camp and took the nature trail in the direction of Fehrenbach. Once again we went through the forest along a small stream on narrow paths. When we arrived in the meadows of the Fehrenbachgrund, we climbed a hill on the edge of which we walked parallel to the stream above through dense bushes. The third lost place of the day was the sports field in Fehrenbach, just before we arrived back at the hiking car park. Conclusion: Great enthusiasm from @Besi, because she noticed that there was a suitable place for the forest buffet almost every full kilometer. We also love forest paths - especially when they lead along streams! We like the Thuringian Forest with the Rennsteig anyway! So - an all-round successful day!

Always following the motto, there is no such thing as bad weather, we start our tour in the morning in Masserberg on the Rennsteig. We really wanted to walk or crawl through the advertised eye of the needle 😉. Because whoever goes through the eye of the needle can make a wish....... Our tour was described as very difficult and announced as being extremely strenuous 🤔. Prepared for the worst, we always wait for the "dangerous" section. The path led us along narrow, overgrown forest paths that were already quite slippery due to the wet leaves. When we arrived at the eye of the needle, we first sent our wishes out into the universe and of course we hope that they will come true 😉😅. Despite the drizzle and poor visibility, we had a wonderful hike 👍. If the sun had been shining on these colorful autumn leaves, we would have taken even more photo breaks 😉. One or two slippery roots brought us a little closer to the forest floor, but luckily nothing happened 🙏🙏🙏 The sun actually came out 🌞 at the Werraquelle 👌. After a short break with a little refreshment at the Werraquelle, we are now walking back towards Masserberg. By now our shoes are completely wet, not only our feet are really cold and we are looking forward to the sauna in our hotel 🧖‍♀️😅
