Hiking
Of all the beautiful mountain lakes in Banff National Park, Peyto Lake is the most radiant. Stone pigments ground up by the glacier reach the lake in the meltwater, bestowing it with wonderful colour. The water is milky, but when the sun shines on it, it reflects in a uniquely bright blue hue. This short hike takes you to two viewpoints for the lake and is suitable for everyone.
It’s only a short hop from the car park to the viewing terrace and ramps provide barrier-free access to the platform at the front. From here, you have a splendid view over the forest onto Peyto Lake and the glacier that feeds it.
Follow the path through the dense coniferous forest to a clearing with several large rocks. From this natural vantage point, you’ll gain yet another beautiful perspective. If you stay quiet and wait patiently, you’re sure to be visited by cheeky chipmunks, who return to the site expecting to be fed. However, bear in mind that this is forbidden, as the food could be harmful to the little rodents.
For the return, follow a small loop through the forest or simply take the outward route. It doesn't take long to get back to the car park.
