This cycling route is considered easy and relaxing. It's predominantly flat, following the Maas River, and is well-suited for recreational cyclists looking for a leisurely ride rather than a challenging workout. While there might be minor variations in elevation, it avoids significant climbs.
The terrain is mostly flat, with approximately 93% on paved roads and about 7% on unpaved or semi-paved surfaces. You'll cycle through diverse river landscapes including gravel banks, floodplains, ancient waterways, dikes, and river forelands. Some sections might pass through slightly rolling forests.
The route offers continuous scenic views along the Maas River, with lush riverside nature, floodplain forests, and flower-rich meadows. You'll pass through authentic Maas villages, including the 'white town' of Thorn. Keep an eye out for Galloway cattle and Konik horses grazing in the Rivierpark Maasvallei. Notable points include the ‘t Veerke Ferry Rotem–Grevenbicht, the Cycle path between Itteren and the Juliana Canal, Castle Stein Ruins, and the Skipper's House, Urmond.
The route is beautiful during spring and summer when the riverside nature, floodplain forests, and flower-rich meadows are in full bloom. The presence of welcoming pavement cafés in the villages also makes warmer months ideal for breaks and refreshments.
A popular starting point for a 68.5 km loop variation of this route is Berg aan de Maas, where parking facilities are likely available. For other access points, it's advisable to check local municipality websites or tourist information for specific parking options in the Maas villages along the route.

Yes, a unique and charming aspect of the route is the opportunity to use small, picturesque ferries to cross the Maas River, adding an element of adventure to your journey. One such ferry is the ‘t Veerke Ferry Rotem–Grevenbicht.
NB! 🛳 The ferries are only from 01.04 to 31.10. in operation. Inquire in advance! 🏃🏃🏼♀️The Maastricht Running Festival is in April. Roads are closed from 8.30am to 3.30pm. This year it was on 18-04-2022. I was at the points after 3.30 pm.😅 I wasn't on an ebike! On the way back it is more often uphill!
I actually wanted to follow the original route from Berg an de Maas. However, at KP 19 in Grevenbicht it turned out that the Mass ferry was currently out of service due to engine failure. So I drove on to Roosteren to cross the bridge over the Maas to Masseik. From there I went back to KP 19 to then get back on the original route. That was 18 more kilometers. All in all a very varied tour.
Nice trip, along the Maas and Geul, small villages, beautiful cycle paths
