Hiking
New River Provincial Park’s Chitticks Beach Trail is a real hidden gem on New Brunswick’s enchanting south coast. Day in, day out, the ebb and flow of the tide creates constantly evolving scenes that’ll amaze you again and again.
From the car park, you hike through a dense coastal spruce forest to a clearing at the eponymous Chitticks Beach. The Bay of Fundy has the highest tidal range in the world and, depending on its status, you can explore the beach and its rounded pebbles or enjoy the view of the bay from one of the washed up logs. Speaking of views, the walk back along the coast serves them up in spades!
Some tricky passages by the cliffs are made safe by wooden walkways and railings. In places, these also allow you to walk to the natural pools and marvel at the diversity of the crabs, sea snails and starfish.
If you fancy a longer hike, you can take the Barnaby Head Trail after around 1 kilometre (0.6 mi) at Chitticks Beach. With the additional loop to the outermost point of the peninsula, you can extend the hike to just under 5 kilometres (3 mi).
