The Hohenlohe Residence Route is more than just a bike tour – it's a journey of discovery full of history, enjoyment, and romantic half-timbered towns. In a large loop, the route leads from Weikersheim to Rothenburg ob der Tauber and back again. Around 82 varied kilometers invite you to immerse yourself in the heart of a region that delights with enchanted valleys, gentle hills, and picturesque places.

The adventure begins in Weikersheim: On the market square, you look out at the town's magnificent Renaissance castle. Once the seat of the Lords of Hohenlohe, it still enchants today with its originally preserved furnishings and the baroque castle garden. Outside the town, you follow the dreamy Vorbach stream south to Schrozberg, where your gaze can wander into the distance from the highest point of the route. The path continues through quiet forests until you reach the Tauber Valley again. Here, Rothenburg ob der Tauber awaits as a real treasure: the world-famous medieval old town enchants with its winding alleys, historic squares, and an impressive abundance of colorful half-timbered houses. Rothenburg offers everything for an unforgettable stopover – from sights like the Plönlein or the Topplerschlösschen to the imposing town wall.

After an eventful stay amidst historical times, your bike rolls comfortably back along the Tauber to the starting point of your tour. On the way to Weikersheim, one charming half-timbered idyll follows the next: Tauberzell tempts with culinary delights, in Creglingen it's worth visiting exciting museums, and in Röttingen, artfully designed sundials and medieval facades tell of past days.

Each of the small towns and every village along the route tells its own story – experienced between vineyards, on gently sloping riverbanks, or under the roofs of centuries-old half-timbered houses. Thus, the Hohenlohe Residence Route becomes an experience for heart and soul, making the beauty and charm of the half-timbered region tangible in a unique way.

Marketplace Weikersheim

Highlight • Settlement

A wonderful, quiet spot, with its small wine bars, cafés, restaurants, and ice cream parlor, it's a great place to linger. The market square is especially recommended, as it's home to most of the outdoor dining options and offers a direct view of the castle.

Schimmelturm, Niederstetten

Highlight • Monument

The somewhat terrifying fountain next to the tower represents the legend of the “Steidemer Männle”: In the legend, a farmer had to flee from his Rothenburg pursuers. Niederstetten was a free city, so if he got there he would be safe. The pursuers caught him at the city gate and only the upper body of the farmer fell into the free Niederstetten.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber — Old Town

Highlight • Historical Site

Rothenburg is considered one of Germany's best-preserved medieval old towns, and the first glimpse of the half-timbered facades around the market square immediately shows you why. If you have some time, a walk along the completely preserved town wall is worthwhile. From above, you'll see the old town's roofscape from a perspective you won't soon forget. In the early morning, the city is still quiet and almost belongs to you alone.

View of Tauberzell

Highlight • Viewpoint

Tauberzell is a romantic little town on the Tauber River. In addition to beautiful half-timbered houses, there are also good places to stop for a bite to eat. Major highlights in Tauberzell include the annual wine festival, which takes place from Corpus Christi until the following Sunday, and the Tauberzell winegrowers' street wine festival, which is always held on the second-to-last weekend in July.

Thank God I didn't run into extraterrestrials on World UFO Day. Whereby the danger grew steadily with the extensive visits to the beer garden. So I have to be content with the traces of the "blue-blooded" nobility.

From Detwang near Rothenburg by bike comfortably to Schrozberg. The train takes us to Elpersheim. From there on the Tauber Cycle Path back to Detwang. On the tour Weikersheim should be driven through. A detour to or in the castle with the adjoining garden is worthwhile.

From Markersheim station by bike on the train to Schrotzberg to the starting point. The end point is Markersheim again.

A very nice tour through a magnificent landscape. At the beginning, we had strong backs🌬, which, however, developed into a 💩🥵headwind🌬 with each kilometer. Then our phone battery ran out, so the last 15 km weren't recorded.
