Hiking

The Black Marsh Nature Trail is an out-and-back across Prince Edward Island’s most north-westerly point that discovers the area’s spectacular red cliffs. It starts from the visitor centre car park at the North Cape Lighthouse, which is still operational and open to visitors today, despite its age.

From the lighthouse, the trail leads through a windswept forest and across an impressive moorland landscape. There are 25 information boards that explain the landscape’s unique ecology. If you look closely, you’ll notice tiny and unusual plants and insects, including beautiful orchids, carnivorous plants, dragonflies and butterflies. Have your binoculars at the ready, as various seabirds and eagles can be spotted too.

The hike continues along the coast to Elephant Rock. Information boards explain the geological events that led to its formation and its current form. To return to the start, simply retrace your steps.
