Hiking

Whether you arrive from the Rocky Mountains or the Alberta prairies, the Horseshoe Canyon is like another world entirely. Its unique sedimentary rocks provide an insight into another time. Contrary to what the canyon’s name might suggest, you’re more likely to encounter dinosaurs here than horses.

Starting from the visitor car park, you’ll get your first glimpse of the 3-kilometre (1.9 mi) long canyon. Several layers of clay, sandstone and shale give the canyon its multi-layered and colourful appearance. The rock is between 60-80 million years old and has preserved many ancient animals. Even today, dinosaur bones are regularly discovered, mostly by visitors rather than palaeontologists. If you find anything of interest, please take a photo of the site and contact the Royal Tyrell Museum.

The route takes you on an anti-clockwise loop around the canyon, where several viewing platforms provide different perspectives. As you progress, you’ll gain an appreciation of the canyon’s U-shape and the origin of its name. There are many opportunities to take detours and explore, but it’s best to follow the route to avoid getting lost in the canyon.

Bear in mind that there’s no shade along the route, so bring plenty to drink, sun cream and a hat, and try to avoid the midday sun if possible. Decent hiking footwear is recommended, though the main trail is pretty straightforward. There’s often no mobile reception in the canyon – always inform someone of your planned route before you start your hike.

The wooden stairs allow you to get a little closer to the canyon safely and comfortably. The platform gives you the feeling of being in the canyon and not standing above it. A great perspective.

To the north of Horseshoe Canyon, the landscape changes a little. The canyon becomes flatter and you can get closer to the interesting rock formations.

I recommend going down into the canyon, the trail is easy, then you can get lost in it, it is not that big so you will always find your way back 😀
