This detour is exceptionally easy and suitable for cyclists of all fitness levels, including families. The path is largely flat with no significant slopes, making it a comfortable ride even on regular bikes without the need for e-bikes.
The route is mostly paved, consisting of dedicated bike paths and low-traffic country lanes, ensuring a safe journey. There are some short sections of compacted gravel and dirt, but these do not significantly increase the difficulty.
You'll encounter diverse scenery, including country meadows, small villages, and quiet neighborhoods. Key highlights include the Konstanz Bicycle Bridge, the scenic Poplar Avenue to Reichenau Island, and the View of the Rhine at the Old Rhine Bridge, Konstanz. Reichenau Island itself is a UNESCO World Heritage site with ancient churches, an herb garden, and the Hochwart vantage point offering 360-degree views.
The starting point in Constance at the Bicycle Bridge is easily accessible. For parking, look for public parking facilities in Konstanz city center or near the harbor, which are typically well-connected to the main Lake Constance Cycle Path.
Absolutely! The flat terrain, mostly paved paths, and low-traffic sections make this detour ideal for families and cyclists of all ages. The island itself offers many safe and scenic cycling paths.
Yes, this route partially follows sections of several official trails, including the Literaturland BW - Radweg 04 - Abstecher Reichenau, the Jakobsweg Hegau, and the EuroVelo 15 - Rheinradweg - Teilstrecke Konstanz - Stein am Rhein. It also forms part of the larger Bodensee-Radweg.
The best time to cycle is generally from spring to early autumn (April to October). During these months, the weather is pleasant, and the island's gardens and vineyards are in full bloom or harvest. Summer offers opportunities for swimming in Lake Constance.
Dogs are generally allowed on the cycle paths, but it's important to keep them on a leash, especially when passing through populated areas or nature reserves like the Wollmatinger Ried. Always clean up after your dog.
No, you do not need any special permits to cycle this route or to access Reichenau Island. There are no general entrance fees for the island itself, though some specific attractions like museums or churches may have their own admission charges. The route passes through the Wollmatinger Ried - Untersee - Gnadensee nature reserve, where it's important to stay on marked paths and respect wildlife.
Yes, especially around Reichenau Island, you'll find numerous restaurants, cafes, and picnic spots. There are also several swimming areas perfect for taking a refreshing break during your ride.
Yes, the path is exceptionally well-marked with signs and bike symbols on the ground, making navigation straightforward for non-local cyclists. You'll easily find your way from Constance to Reichenau Island and around the island itself.
A very pleasant cycling tour for those who appreciate the island of Reichenau, a World Heritage Site, with its impressive monastery complex. The route is flat and short, with well-maintained cycle paths. This leaves plenty of time for the Konstanz harbor and picturesque old town.
Very nice little tour to Constance. The Reichenau lives from growing vegetables and from tourists. The short drive to Constance is done quickly. The cathedral, the old town and the harbor are recommended there, although they tend to be overcrowded. The Council of Constance acquired historical significance from 1414 to 1418 after the division of the church with at times three popes (Rome, Pisa, Avignon) ended. Despite promised safe conduct, Jan Hus, who wanted to reform the church, was burned. Highlight on the way back: Church of St. George on the Reichenau.
Comfortable introductory tour as part of our short vacation in Konstanz😊
Nice trip to the island of Reichenau. Circumnavigation recommended. Through beautiful villages and all the vegetable fields and greenhouses.
The small patisserie invites you to take a break 🍰☕️
Why the island of Reichenau is a world cultural heritage does not reveal to me. There are 3 churches and orchards. The Pappelalllee on the island is super beautiful! The island itself was rather quiet to rather disappointing. But maybe the expectations were too high.
A really beautiful island, with lots of fruit and vegetable cultivation. The island is not as crowded as the island of Mainau.
