Fahrrad Erlebnistour 5: Nach Würzburg und durchs Welzbachtal

Cycling

This demanding day tour takes you in an extensive loop from Tauberbischofsheim to Würzburg right in the heart of the Franconian wine region and back again. If the entire route is too far for you, you can shorten a section of it via Lauda by train. Alternatively, you can of course take a two-day tour and spend the night in Würzburg.

From Tauberbischofsheim it goes steeply up to the Hammerberg. Once at the top, the route profile remains quite jagged and leads you across fields and through forests to Würzburg, down into the Main Valley. Back you can also expect two decent climbs, then the profile calms down a bit and the route leads in parts along the Romantic Road and through the Welzbach Valley back to your starting point in Tauberbischofsheim.

In Würzburg, the towering Marienberg Fortress is hard to miss. You can either face the mountain of the same name and explore the fortress up close or just enjoy the picturesque view of it, like so many others - for example from the old Main Bridge. Where you are already on the Main, it is of course worth taking a small tour along its banks - perhaps to the Old Crane to stop there and then back through the Würzburg old town, where the impressive Marienkapelle stands - those who are in Knows how to convince in terms of their name through absolute understatement.

Alter Kranen Würzburg

Highlight • Monument

The old crane is a popular meeting place on the Main promenade - especially popular on a mild summer evening. But you can also include a short stop along your hike and let your legs dangle over the sea wall.

Old Main Bridge Würzburg

Highlight • Bridge

The atmosphere is most beautiful in the summer evening when the bridge is busy with lots of nice people drinking their wine there.

View of Marienberg Fortress

Highlight • Castle

View of Würzburg's landmark, which has a history spanning more than 1,000 years. A detour there is worthwhile. Guided tours are offered regularly, but advance registration is recommended. Haselbrunn Spring and Seating Area

Highlight • Natural Monument

Perfect place for a break after the steep climb. Unfortunately we didn't see any water in the stream. However, the tap water was very refreshing!

Liebfrauenbrunn pilgrimage chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

The chapel impresses with its Gothic architectural style made of red Tauber Valley sandstone and its artistic decorations. The Kaiserlindenallee with fourteen Stations of the Cross leading to the chapel is particularly impressive.

Werbach Kneipp Facility

Highlight • Rest Area

Nice area with numerous seating and chill options. In the high season with toilets. For the next generation there is a supporting actor in a playground, a beach field and the pump track! Great!

I would do the tour in the opposite direction. The 16% ascent from Waldbronn to Altertheim can only be ridden with a mountain bike or e-bike. With the racing, gravel or trekking / touring bike it is very tedious.
