Hiking

A visit to Virginia Falls is certainly a once in a lifetime experience. The 96-metre (315-ft) waterfall in the remote Nahanni National Park Reserve can only be reached by seaplane or on a multi-day canoe or raft trip. Even the journey there is a magnificent adventure.

The seaplane drops you off at the campsite, which is also where you should disembark if you’re travelling along the South Nahanni River. The starting point for the 30-minute hike to the falls, a well-maintained boardwalk trail on the south bank of the river takes you to the rushing cascade in the middle of the wilderness.

The flight to Virginia Falls is around two hours from Fort Simpson, and travel companies usually offer the visit as part of a full-day excursion. Canoe or raft trips usually last between one week and ten days.

There is also a campsite with restrooms near the landing stage for the seaplanes that are used to reach Virginia Falls. Wooden walkways make it easier to move through the forest and connect the different campsites. A short path also leads to the small lake.

Highlight • Waterfall

The spectacular, 96-meter-high Virginia Falls are located in the Nahanni National Park Reserve, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1976 and is therefore one of the first of its kind.

Due to their remote location, far from any infrastructure, they can only be reached by seaplane or boat from Fort Simpson.
