The estimated duration for completing the Altmühl Panorama Trail Loop 25 Riedenburg is approximately 4 hours and 50 minutes. This is for the full 17.6 km (10.9 miles) loop.
This loop is rated as moderate in difficulty, considering both technical demands and stamina. While the broader Altmühltal Panorama Trail is often described as easy to moderate, Loop 25 specifically requires a good basic fitness level. Beginners with some hiking experience and good physical condition should be able to manage it.
The terrain is quite varied. You can expect about 62% of the trail to be 'naturnah' (close to nature), with 21% on asphalt and 17% on fine gravel. The route takes you through the beautiful dry valley of Emmertal, past an abandoned quarry, and offers sections of peaceful forest, riverside paths, and scenic routes along open hillsides and high ridges. You'll also encounter some rugged rocky landscapes typical of the Jura region.
The loop offers fascinating views and historical sites. Key highlights include the Riedenburg Market Square where the trail starts, and the New Chapel in Naturpark Altmühltal. You'll also find magnificent views over the Altmühl valley from the hang glider ramp at the 'Devil's Rock' (Teufelsfelsen) and the 'Schwammerl' viewpoint, officially known as View of Riedenburg from the Mushroom Shelter. Prunn Castle, famous for an original Nibelungenlied manuscript, is also a significant point of interest along the way.
The trail officially starts from the Riedenburg Market Square. Riedenburg, being a popular tourist destination, offers various parking options within the town. Look for designated public parking areas near the market square or the town center to begin your hike conveniently.
Generally, hiking trails in Naturpark Altmühltal are dog-friendly. However, it's always recommended to keep your dog on a leash, especially in nature protection areas, near wildlife, or when passing through villages and near livestock. Please ensure you carry waste bags and clean up after your pet.
The Altmühl Panorama Trail Loop 25 Riedenburg is best enjoyed during the spring, summer, and autumn months. These seasons offer pleasant temperatures and vibrant scenery, from blooming wildflowers to colorful fall foliage. Winter hiking is possible, but conditions can be challenging with snow and ice, especially on higher or rocky sections.
No, there are generally no permits or entrance fees required for hiking on public trails within the Naturpark Altmühltal, including the Altmühl Panorama Trail Loop 25 Riedenburg. However, specific attractions like Prunn Castle may have entrance fees for tours or access to their facilities.
Yes, the Altmühl Panorama Trail Loop 25 Riedenburg intersects with and shares sections of several other trails. Notably, it covers 100% of the 'Altmühl Panoramaweg Schlaufe 25 Riedenburg' and significant portions of 'Rundweg Riedenburg 13' (79%), 'Altmühltal-Panoramaweg' (26%), and 'Jurasteig Hauptroute' (26%).
Given its 'moderate' difficulty rating and nearly 5-hour duration, this specific loop might be challenging for very young children or those unaccustomed to longer hikes. However, older children with hiking experience and good stamina could enjoy the diverse terrain and historical sights. Consider the fitness level of your family before attempting the full loop, or look for shorter, family-friendly sections around Riedenburg.
Yes, Riedenburg is a medieval '3-castle town' and a popular tourist destination, so you'll find various cafes, restaurants, and pubs in the town center, especially near the Riedenburg Market Square where the trail begins and ends. It's advisable to carry sufficient water and snacks for the hike itself, as options directly on the trail may be limited.
This loop trail gets the rating "not recommended" from me. More than two thirds of the way were either visually unattractive or difficult to walk on. Large parts of the hiking trail have degenerated into farm roads, deep tractor tracks filled with water, with mud in between. I will definitely not run this loop a second time.
Today I set out on my 10th loop trail along the Altmühl Valley Panorama Trail. I moved the starting point from Riedenburg to Jachenhausen and skipped the branch trail from the starting point to the circular trail. However, I started directly from Jachenhausen on a branch trail to the "Falkenhorst" lookout point. Wonderful paths lead to this magnificent viewing rock with a magnificent view over the Altmühl Loop. I reconnected to my path at the hang glider launch pad at Teufelsfelsen, after enjoying the fantastic view there as well. The trail continues along forest paths to Riedenburg. I enjoy the view of the picturesque town with its striking cityscape and imposing castles. I left the Altmühl River through a pretty dry valley. From here, the route continues uphill, mostly on gravel paths, to Rieden and then on to Jachenhausen. A beautiful hike, although the first part was much more beautiful and impressive.
So, now finally the loop 25. Two weeks ago it was no longer possible, but the weather made it very good. In the valley at 7 o'clock the fog was still lying on the canal that accompanied us to the Emmerthal. On the ascent, however, it became more and more a glorious late summer day. At the top it went on in the forest to Jachenhausen. We have probably unconsciously shortened it a little. From the hang glider jump there was often a wonderful view of the valley. Here the panorama path has once again fully earned its name. Finally, a coffee at the Frank bakery. Beautiful, tranquil Altmühltal. 🛥️⛵
A hike without steep climbs like this one is rare in Riedenburg. After a leisurely lunch break in Jachenhausen, it's back to RID quickly and downhill.
Today nice tour with a view 😎 over Riedenburg .... to the Teufelsfelsen .... juniper heaths .... quarry. And the weather was perfect and so was the company. A few kilometers missing on the tour should have been a good 15 kilometers. Unfortunately, the battery was exhausted
