This route was planned by komoot.
The full circular route is approximately 18 kilometers (just over 11 miles) long and typically takes around 5 hours to complete. This duration can vary based on your pace, the number of stops at breweries, and whether you choose to explore any of the shorter variations.
While some sources rate it as 'moderate,' komoot classifies this trail as 'difficult.' It features varied terrain with hills and a combined elevation gain and loss of nearly 600 meters. A good level of fitness is recommended for the full 18-kilometer experience. Shorter variations are available if you prefer a less strenuous hike.
As a circular route, you have the flexibility to start at any of the villages along the way, such as Trockau, Weiglathal, Lindenhardt, or Leups. These villages typically offer local parking options, often near the breweries or village centers. There isn't one single designated trailhead parking lot, allowing you to choose your starting point conveniently.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, as it passes through rural areas, forests, and villages, it's always advisable to keep your dog on a leash, especially when near livestock, in populated areas, or on sections that coincide with roads. Remember to bring water for your dog, especially on warmer days.
The Bierquellen-Wanderweg is enjoyable in spring, summer, and autumn. Spring offers lush greenery and blooming orchards, while summer provides warm weather for enjoying the outdoor brewery gardens. Autumn brings beautiful fall foliage. Hiking in winter is possible but requires appropriate gear for potentially icy or snowy conditions, and some smaller breweries might have reduced hours.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Bierquellen-Wanderweg or to access the Naturpark Fränkische Schweiz - Frankenjura. It is a publicly accessible natural area. However, please respect local regulations, stay on marked paths, and be mindful of private property.
The trail offers picturesque rural scenery, winding through dense forests, open pastures with grazing horses, and small orchards. You'll traverse a mix of forest roads, farm roads, and some paved sections. Expect varied terrain with hills, providing rewarding views of the Franconian countryside. You might even spot a small, private castle in Trockau from the trail.
The highlight of this trail is its integration of local Franconian breweries, often referred to as 'beer sources.' You'll find opportunities to sample traditional local beers and regional cuisine at places like Gasthof Zum Fichta, Kürzdörfer Brewery, Lindenhardt, and Gradl Brewery Inn. The route passes through charming villages such as Trockau, Weiglathal, Lindenhardt, and Leups, all offering options for refreshments.
Yes, the route coincides with segments of several other trails. Notably, parts of the Bierquellen-Wanderweg run along sections of the Bierquellen-Wanderweg (which covers 100% of the route), Trokau Rundwanderweg 1, Radrundweg Bayreuth BT14, and the Fränkischer Marienweg – Ave-Maria-Route. It also shares paths with the historic Jakobsweg Hof-Hiltpoltstein for a portion.
To fully enjoy the 'beer source' experience, consider starting your hike earlier in the day, especially on weekends, to allow ample time for leisurely stops at the breweries. Many breweries offer traditional Franconian meals, so planning your lunch or dinner around one of these stops is highly recommended. Don't forget to try the local 'dunkles' (dark lagers)!
Yes, the Bierquellen-Wanderweg is designed as a circular route. This means you can start and end your hike at the same point, making logistics easier. The trail is well-marked with distinctive yellow beer mug signs for the main route and brown beer mugs for shortcuts, ensuring straightforward navigation.
The 🍻 “Bierquelle Hiking Trail” runs in the Franconian Switzerland/Veldenstein Forest Nature Park. Franconian hospitality, hearty 🍻 beer and culinary delights and wonderful landscape experiences 😃 await you 🚀 It starts at the 🅿️ parking lot at the 🍻 Brewery-Gasthof Herold in Büchenbach (BüBa) at 🌡 +15° Celsius 🌤️ in 🧭 direction Trockau. The 🍺 “Bierquelle hiking trail” initially leads slightly uphill through the forest and after about 1.5 kilometers passes under the A9 motorway. We simply follow the sign of the yellow 🍺 beer mug to Trockau and continue hiking to the Wirthaus Weiglathal. At exactly ⏰ 12:00 p.m. the ☀️ sun is shining and we are opening the 🍻🌳 beer garden season. The tasty dark beer from the in-house brewery Bösehack runs down like oil. To strengthen yourself there is Obatzda and a goulash soup. Let's continue 🥾🥾, the next 🍻 brewery is waiting for us in 3.5 kilometers. 😕 It's a shame, the 🍻 brewery inn Kürzdörfer is 🚱 closed. “There’s nothing you can do about it, and no amount of complaining will help you.” The next 🍻 “beer supply station” is only 3.0 kilometers away 😎 Cool, we are the first guests at the 🍻 Gradl brewery in Leups. We still have free choice of seating in the brewery courtyard. That changes suddenly, when 6 Harley Davidsons, 10 cyclists and 8 cars 🅿️ arrive, all of the beer benches are suddenly occupied. Whoever rests rusts - where we don't 🤣 The last 3.0 kilometers are waiting for us and a fresh 🍒 cherry crumble cake in the 🍻 Brewery-Gasthof Herold. All's well that ends well, we have arrived at our 📍 starting point and are ending the “Bierquelle Hiking Trail” at the Herold Brewery-Gasthof 🍻 🤪
Nice round with 4 breweries. Unfortunately one wasn't open. Then a few lighter ones have to be tapped in the pension today.🍺
What a beautiful hike. Ok, the route with mountain and valley passages, motorway noise and a lot of tarred paths ... free. We went here to try the beer. 🍺🍺😂😂 The Bierquellenweg passed in any case.
Tour not complete because the GPS stopped working just before the halfway point. However, to fully enjoy the beer tour, you should set off at lunchtime as not all of them are open all the time.
The tour is only recommended from 12 or 1 p.m., as all breweries only open from 4 to 5 p.m. One is open from 10 a.m. The whole tour was basically beer-free. So you shouldn't expect any breweries to be open. I was personally very disappointed with the tour. They should rename it Wasserquelleweg, because there were enough fountains!😅
