This route was planned by komoot.
A common starting point with parking is the hiking parking lot in Marktredwitz's Stadtwald, conveniently located near the "Forsthaus" restaurant. This provides good access to the loop.
The trail offers a very varied landscape. You'll encounter rugged rock formations, dense forests, and open panoramic views. The path includes forest trails that can be stony and root-covered, as well as sections on fortified forest and agricultural roads. Expect significant ascents and descents, requiring sure-footedness.
This loop is rich in natural and historical landmarks. Key highlights include the Püttnerfels, the Kösseinehaus and Kösseine Observation Tower at the summit, the impressive Little Haberstein, and the Burgsteinfelsen Viewing Platform. A major attraction is the Luisenburg Rock Labyrinth, and you'll also pass the Avenue to the Schloss Alexandersbad Terraces.
Yes, there is an entrance fee to access the Luisenburg Rock Labyrinth. This unique area, considered Europe's largest granite rock labyrinth, features massive boulders, caves, and gorges, with an adventurous path that sometimes requires crawling or climbing stairs.
Generally, the hiking trails in the Fichtelgebirge are dog-friendly. However, be aware that the Luisenburg Rock Labyrinth section involves narrow passages, stairs, and crawling, which might be challenging or unsuitable for some dogs. Always keep your dog on a leash, especially near wildlife and other hikers.
The best time to hike this trail is typically from late spring through early autumn (May to October). During these months, the weather is generally more favorable, and the paths are clear of snow and ice. Autumn offers beautiful fall foliage, while spring brings blooming nature. Always check local weather conditions before you go.
No general permits or fees are required for hiking the trails within the Fichtelgebirge Nature Park itself. However, as mentioned, there is an entrance fee specifically for the Luisenburg Rock Labyrinth section of the route.
Yes, the route combines sections of several other hiking paths. You'll find yourself on parts of the Marktredwitz-Kösseine, Radverkehrsnetz Landkreis Wunsiedel, Quellenweg, European long distance path E6, Germany, Fichtelgebirge, and Kösseine trails, among others.
Yes, you can find refreshments at the Kösseinehaus, located at the summit of the Kösseine. The trail also passes through Bad Alexandersbad, a historic spa town, which offers opportunities for a refreshing stop and potentially other dining options.
Given the trail's difficult classification and varied terrain, sturdy, ankle-supporting hiking boots are essential. Dress in layers suitable for changing weather conditions in the mountains. Bring plenty of water, snacks, a first-aid kit, a map or GPS device (like komoot), and sun protection. Trekking poles can also be very helpful for the ascents and descents.
From the Kösseine summit, you are treated to expansive panoramic views over the entire Fichtelgebirge region. The Kösseine Observation Tower provides an even better vantage point to take in the stunning scenery.
On a sunny day, I enjoyed a beautiful late autumn hike to the granite cliffs in the Fichtel Mountains. At the beginning and end, I walked mostly under yellowish, reddish-brown rusting beech trees, later often through the lush green of the moss in the coniferous forest. And with the coniferous forest came the often magnificent granite formations. They often looked as if giants had tossed them there. The child in me thought of legends and fairy tales: elves living in the primeval forest of mosses or among the mushrooms, giants hurling granite boulders across the landscape, and mountain spirits frightening hikers. Not all the forest paths were scenic, but all of them connected truly beautiful spots in the landscape. Including all breaks, the hike took 8 hours and 20 minutes.

My four hundredths tour on Komoot and such a great one. The weather and the light were perfect and made the autumnal colours 🍂 🍁 shine.
An autumn hike in cool temperatures. On the way you pass many spectacular rock formations, some of which have a viewing platform on the top. If you climb up the ladder, you can enjoy incredible views of the peaks of the Fichtel Mountains and the Bohemian Forest. But that requires a bit of courage and a head for heights. The detour (vertical blue bar) over a rock path to the Grosser Haberstein is definitely worth it because of the great views. The rock labyrinth is spectacular and constantly offers surprises. Without the direction arrows you wouldn't find the way. Sometimes you have to bend down, sometimes you have to climb over rocks or squeeze through narrow passages. For long stretches the entire hike led over rock and root paths. Surefootedness and good footwear are essential. A real 639 m
Our day of hiking in the Fichtelgebirge Nature Park was intense, varied, and full of fascinating impressions. In total, we covered around 24 kilometers – a challenging route that challenged us physically, but also richly rewarded us. A highlight of the tour was definitely the visit to the rock labyrinth near Luisenburg Castle. This unique natural monument is considered the largest rock labyrinth in Europe. Massive granite blocks tower here to form bizarre formations, some of which can only be navigated by crouching or crawling. Small tunnels, narrow crevices, and impressive passageways make traversing them a small adventure. The blend of geology and nature was particularly impressive – a place that appears both mysterious and majestic. After the labyrinth, we continued on to the Burgsteinfelsen rock formations. The climb was steep in places, but worthwhile. From the top, there was a wide view of the surrounding forests and hills of the Fichtelgebirge. Shortly after, we reached Haberstein, another vantage point with a magnificent panoramic view. The view there was simply breathtaking—an ideal place for a short rest. The entire hike led through a diverse landscape: dense forest, moss-covered rocks, expansive vistas, and repeated geological features. The weather also cooperated—dry, slightly cloudy, and not too hot, making it ideal for hiking. At the end of the day, we were tired but very satisfied. The combination of exercise, nature experiences, and exciting geological formations made this hiking day something very special.
We took advantage of the beautiful weather for a spontaneous trip to the Fichtel Mountains. From Bad Alexandersbad we went to the Kösseinehaus. After lunch we continued over the small and large Haberstein towards the rock labyrinth and Luisenburg. There were many rocks with ladders and great viewing platforms along the way. An all-round successful day and almost on our doorstep. Let's see what the next two days bring.
The rock labyrinth is awesome - perfect fun, not just for families with kids. https://www.fichtelgebirge.bayern/detail/id=5f8030c43e91d003a390c22f?utm_source=Reiseblogger-Markus-Schmidt&utm_medium=www.familienurlaub-info.com If you are interested in history, use the audio guide https://apps.apple.com/de/app/hearonymus/id543631084 and listen to the corresponding entertaining episode according to the number on the tree that indicates the chapter.
Trip to the Fichtel Mountains. Very varied tour. Almost only very beautiful forest, rock, grass and root paths. I like the area.
