The Abt-Degen-Steig is almost always mentioned when it comes to the most beautiful wine hiking trails in Franconia. However, I have my own favorites and am critical of such listings 😉 So I formed my own opinion of this hike near Zeil am Main. The starting point was reached in a few minutes from the Zeil train station. Fortunately, as always, I had the GPX data on my cell phone, because to be honest, I wouldn't have been able to cope with the signposting of the official route: too few, sometimes misleading and partly hidden between greenery. In addition, many signs are camouflaged with subtle lichen trimmings 😂 It started unspectacularly... Vineyard stop. But that all changed after the Wengert house with the funny face. Rustic stairs led up in the vineyard. And instead of the usual, even rows, terraced vines branched off from the stairs. The wine grows here on different, level floors. It's nice when you don't have to stand in the steep vineyard while working. But such terraces are very labour-intensive, because the use of time-saving machines is hardly possible. I have to climb one of these stairs, the so-called winegrowers' stairs. Respect for the winegrowers and their team, who have to walk these irregular, steep stairs regularly 🥵 At the top I was in a different world. The path led along the Zeiler Höhenweg behind the vineyard. I hardly saw any wine anymore, but the foresight really made me ecstatic 😍 Wide paths between fields and trails in the forest alternated and soon I reached the Schmachtenberg castle ruins. A walk around the ruins is worthwhile. Not only because of the ruins themselves, but also because of the unique view. Then the path led back towards the Zeiler train station. The Abt-Degen-Steig is really a highly recommended wine trail and offers a great mix of vineyards, foresight and rustic paths in the forest. was a very nice tour, very demanding and hot at what felt like 30°
A pleasant round that still offers 1-2 highlights even in cloudy January. Unfortunately we had to cancel the extension to the Zeiler Käppele - paw bent 😔🦮 Next time in the area.
Wine and Main, Bockstaschen and castle tempt you on the Abt-Degen-Steig, which runs through the vineyards between Zeil and Steinbach and is marked with a green Bockstaschen. We are in Lower Franconia and are hiking through the vineyards of Franconian wine, some of which is still produced here by hand. We pass through the Zeiler Kapellenberg vineyard, through Ziegelanger, take a winemaker's staircase and discover the ruins of Schmachtenberg Castle. The Abt-Degen-Steig takes its name from Alberich Degen, who was born in Zeil am Main in 1625 and died in Ebrach in 1686. In 1647 he entered the Ebrach monastery in the Steigerwald and in 1658 became abbot of the Cistercians. Abbot Degen is credited with naturalizing the Silvaner vine from Austria to Franconia.
Very nice hike through the vineyards on the Abt-Degen-Steig, over the Schmachtenberg castle ruins to the Zeiler Käppele. From there you have a great view of Zeil am Main. It's also worth taking a break in the inn at the Zeiler Käppele, the cake is really delicious and the wine tastes good too 😉 From there it went through Zeil back to the hiking car park in Ziegelanger.
A truly beautiful trail with amazing views! We were lucky – the wineries along the way were serving drinks! 🥂😅
languish!mountain! First public tour after the Easter Monday collarbone tour. We are still alive!
In summer temperatures, a special route through the Franconian vineyards on the slopes of the Main was on the program with interesting insights into the local wine culture. At the end there was also a fresh Federweißer from the producer.

Lt. various search queries on the Internet, it is possible to walk the Abt-Degen-Steig on a circular hike of 25 km. Unfortunately, I can't find the appropriate gpx file anywhere. Can Haßberge Tourismus provide this? I would be very happy about that. Request for feedback. Thanks very much!
