This trail is considered easy, making it suitable for all fitness levels and a leisurely walk. It's approximately 7 kilometers long and takes about 1 hour and 46 minutes to complete.
The trail features generally flat and easily accessible paths, with many sections being paved. This means you'll encounter almost no mud. While primarily flat, it offers varied scenery as it meanders through different landscapes, including forests and along the river.
You'll encounter two impressive castles, including the historic De Merode Castle. The route also follows the winding Grote Nete river, passing through nature reserves like 'het Riet' and 'the Kwarekken'. Other notable features include a Chapel with bench, the Bridge over the Grote Nete (Het Trammetje), the 'endless lanes of the Beeltjes', and Westerlo's triangular market square with its centuries-old courthouse.
While specific parking locations are not detailed, the trail is easily accessible. Given its passage through Westerlo's market square and proximity to landmarks, parking is generally available in or around the town center. Look for public parking areas in Westerlo.
Yes, its easy difficulty and mostly paved paths make it a great option for families. The varied scenery, castles, and river views provide plenty of interest for younger hikers.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, it's always recommended to keep your dog on a leash, especially when passing through nature reserves or near wildlife, and to clean up after them.
The trail offers beautiful scenery year-round. Spring and autumn provide pleasant temperatures and vibrant colors, while summer is ideal for enjoying the waterways. Due to the paved sections, it's also a good option in wetter conditions as there's almost no mud.
Yes, the route incorporates sections of several official trails, including the GR 5 Belgium, Flanders South, and the Via Monastica. You'll also find parts of local paths like Inrijtraject Westerlo and various 'dreef' (lane) trails such as Kasteelpark, Beeltjensdreef, and Papedreef.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike this trail or to access the general areas of the de Merode park that the trail passes through. It is freely accessible to the public.
The trail is designed as a circular route, allowing you to experience a variety of landscapes and return to your starting point without retracing your steps. It is fully signposted with nodes for easy navigation.

Take a walk in a fantastic natural setting with two stately castles as a special attraction. Here in the Grote Nete valley, you'll find a beautiful walking backdrop. Walking along the meandering river, you'll cross the nature reserves of Het Riet and De Kwarekken, ultimately arriving at the charming market square of Westerlo. Spot castles, follow the river, and wander through the woods. That's what you can expect on this walking route. #provincieantwerpen #demooisteprovincie #kempen #landschapsparkdemerode #westerlo Nete walk of 7.1 km in Westerlo. Route found on routezoeker.com. Original route is 6.3 km of which 4.7 km unpaved. I have added an extra tour around the impressive town hall of Westerlo, the castle of Countess Jeanne de Merode π°. Via the parking lot you walk past the Bib to the back of the castle. Along the Grote Nete you also pass the Castle of Prince de Merode π°. The Trammeke, an old, unique mobile dam from 1874 that served as a lock or weir system, is also on the route, but is currently being restored. You will also visit the centre of Westerlo with the Grote Markt, the forests of De Beeltjens and Kwarekken, the footbridge between the 2 areas, and of course the Grote Nete. π© Starting point and π ΏοΈ Parking Sportpark De Beeltjens Kasteelpark 6, 2260 Westerlo βπ΄catering in the centre of Westerlo
Today we went to enjoy βΊοΈ the autumn sun π Dirk had a day off, so that was possible. The wooffer π was also allowed to come along. So he was very satisfied. When we had eaten for our afternoon, we took our steel steed π to go for a walk along the Grote Nete. We left in Westerlo at the tourist office. At the church βͺοΈ we took a path that led us to pure nature, an autumnal π treasure. The Grote Nete meanders here in many bends. We found what we were looking for. Picturesque views and some animals π΄π¦ but also warm colors that decorated the landscape. A trip through forests π³π³ and along a river. This beautiful walk gave us a lot of fun π€©π
Departure from the church of Westerlo (You can plan your own tour at the Westerlo tourism building) towards Grote Nete. Our walk was along the Nete, and a castle, then into the forest. A busy walk on Sunday. Everything is walkable π And at "het Anker" you can drink and eat something delicious. Recommended ππ
