There are few things more Catalan than the sea and the mountains, a culinary combination that combines ingredients from both environments. The Pirinexus route is the gravel version of this dish. The route is circular from the Girona train station, the new mecca of cycle tourism, a charming city full of modern and ancestral contrasts on the Ter.

The route runs along countless greenways, forest tracks and tiny roads and enters a collage of landscapes that shows all the faces of Catalonia. Varied agricultural extensions dotted with farmhouses, medieval villages, mysterious volcanoes, dense forests, fertile valleys and countless coastal landscapes await you on the more than 340 kilometres of this Route.

In addition, the cultural landscape hides medieval fortresses and temples, the Greco-Roman ruins of Empúries, wine cellars and endless accommodation and restaurant opportunities full of charm and tradition.

Spring and autumn are ideal for undertaking this journey, even some mild winter days when the sun shines. We recommend that you check your bike beforehand and bring some water and food, although you will pass through various towns with services dedicated to cycle tourists.

During the Spanish Civil War it was dynamited to prevent the advance of rebel troops, so it was rebuilt in 1976, respecting the previous reconstruction.

The bridge crosses the Fluvià river which is a prominent point in Sant Pere Pescador. This bridge not only connects the banks of the river, but also serves as a kind of portal to Sant Pere Pescador. The area around the bridge and river is fairly flat, making it ideal for bike rides or walks. Weekly markets and fairs are held on the esplanade below.

The Fluvià river, on its last journey to the sea, crosses Sant Pere Pescador, and from the town, there is a walk that leaves the bridge and runs parallel to the river on the right bank, facing the sea. This walk is easy and flat, which makes it perfect to do with a group, especially as an afternoon plan when the heat is not so intense.

During this tour, you will meet other cyclists, fishermen, and possibly people practicing water sports such as kayaking, which adds a dynamic touch to the serene landscape of the Fluvià River. In addition, the area is part of the Aiguamolls Natural Park, which guarantees a natural and peaceful experience.

Girona has rightfully become the cycling capital of the Empordà region and is vying to become the cycling capital of Spain.

The city is not only beautiful and full of architectural and historical treasures, but it has also become an ideal cycling destination for all disciplines. Furthermore, its climate and the quiet yet challenging roads in its surroundings make it a haven for riders in the professional peloton.
