Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it typically take to hike this trail?

The Wijers Day Tripper 2 is a substantial hike, covering approximately 24.2 km. Based on average hiking speeds, you can expect to complete it in about 6 hours and 10 minutes. However, if you take your time to enjoy the scenery and highlights, it could take closer to 6-7 hours.

What is the terrain like on this hike?

The terrain is quite varied, reflecting the 'land of 1001 ponds'. You'll walk through historic pond landscapes, over picturesque ponds via plank paths, and encounter a challenging climb to the top of Bolderberg for panoramic views. The route also includes sections through forests, the Mangelbeek valley with a long boardwalk through marshland, and vast heathland. Sturdy shoes or boots are recommended, especially after wet weather.

Is this trail suitable for beginners?

Despite its 'difficult' grading due to length, the Wijerstrail, of which this is a stage, is generally considered ideal for beginner trail hikers. It offers a sense of discovery through nature while remaining relatively close to inhabited areas. However, its length of nearly 25 km means a good level of fitness is still required.

What can I see along the route?

You'll encounter a rich mix of natural beauty and historical landmarks. Highlights include the Valley of the Roosterbeek, a Boardwalk near 't Genaderen, and the expansive Donderslag Heath. You'll also pass by unique pond views like the View of the pond at the foot of the Teutheuvel, and other notable ponds. The trail also features observation towers and bird hides for spotting local wildlife.

What is the best time of year to visit?

The trail can be enjoyed during most seasons. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and beautiful colors, while summer is great for longer daylight hours. However, after a wet period, some sections, especially boardwalks and marshlands, can be muddy, so sturdy waterproof footwear is advisable.

Is this trail dog-friendly?

While the trail passes through natural areas, specific regulations for dogs are not detailed in the available information. It's generally advisable to keep dogs on a leash in nature reserves to protect wildlife and ensure a pleasant experience for all hikers. Please check local signage for any specific restrictions.

Do I need a permit or is there an entrance fee?

Where does the trail start and are there parking facilities?

The Wijers Day Tripper 2, as Stage 2 of the Wijerstrail, typically starts from the historic Abbey of Herkenrode. While specific parking details for this exact starting point are not provided, multi-day trails like this usually have accessible starting points with parking options nearby. It's recommended to check local maps or the Visit Limburg website for the most up-to-date parking information.

What kind of wildlife can I expect to see?

The De Wijers region is renowned for its rich biodiversity, making it one of Europe's most valuable natural areas. You have a good chance of spotting hundreds of rare animal and plant species, particularly various water and marsh birds, from the designated observation towers and bird hides along the route.

Does this trail intersect with other well-known paths?

Yes, the route intersects with several other trails. You'll find sections that overlap with the Heideroute Blauw, Streek-GR Limburgse Mijnen Hoofdtraject, and GR 564, among others. This offers opportunities to explore different parts of the region if you wish to extend or modify your hike.

Is this a loop trail or a point-to-point route?

The Wijers Day Tripper 2 is a point-to-point route. As Stage 2 of the Wijerstrail, it runs from the Abbey of Herkenrode to the ZLDR Luchtfabriek. This means you'll need to arrange transportation at your end point or plan to hike back if you prefer a round trip.

August 22, 2021, Zonhoven Natuurgebied De Teut, Vlonderpark en Ten Haagdoornheide 24 km (Gele route)

This walking route from De Wijers is 24.4 km long and lets you discover the walking areas De Teut, Kelchterhoef, Hengelhoef, Vlonderpark and Ten Haagdoornheide. The entire long-distance route is signposted on site with signs with the Wijers symbol and a blue arrow. This is the shortened version of this LAW!! A beautiful route that runs for about 90% through forest, heath and on sandy paths, the other 10% is paved road surface.

Beautiful walk through the heathlands of some Limburg nature reserves: De Teut, Tenhaagdoornheide and Kelchterhoef. The day started very gray but around noon the sun broke through in full glory. Unfortunately I was a bit too late to see the heath still in full bloom but here and there some color came through.
