Hiking

On the outskirts of the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, lies an incredible corner. This itinerary invites you to explore, first, the Mata de Valencia and the Gerdar Forest. This incredible forested area forms the largest and best-preserved fir forest in Catalonia and one of the most important in southern Europe.

Second, the trail takes you to two of the typical lakes in this area of Catalonia. These are the Negre de Cabanes lake and the Estanyoleta de Cabanes lake, its larger and smaller sister lakes located just a few steps away. Please note that swimming is prohibited, but nothing prevents you from sitting quietly and admiring this idyllic spot surrounded by mountains almost 3,000 meters high.

The route begins and ends at the Gerdar refuge. If you wish, you can eat here, although it's best to book in advance.

August 24, 2023, 24.08.2023 Parc National Aigüestortes. Estany Negro de Cabanes

A hike in the Pyrenees in the Parc National Aigüestortes. By car to the PP not far from Refugio del Gerder, 1580 m. From here to the right of the Riu de Cabanes went steeply up through the spruce forest and the Val de Cabanes. The hiking trail with meter-high plants on the meadows alternated with the scree. After the last steep section you came to the smaller reservoir L'Estanyola de Cabanes. You can reach the Estany Negre de Cabanes, 2190 m, over the scree of large stones. The reservoir embedded between the mountains really comes into its own. After a short break, we went back the same way, except for the last stretch that ran to the right of the Riu de Cabanes.
