The historical and heritage importance of the Montesquiu and Besora castles is undeniable. And with this itinerary, you can explore both, as well as the surrounding landscapes, which are spectacular at any time of year.
The route begins and ends at the parking lot of the 9th-century Montesquiu Castle. It's open to the public and can be visited, but you must book in advance. Once underway, the path offers incredible panoramic views before reaching the most spectacular section of the trail: the Mongia Pass. This spectacular pass runs through marl, a reddish carbonate sedimentary rock containing many marine fossils.
A little further on, you'll spot the other star of this adventure: Besora Castle. Visit its ruins and those of the Romanesque church of Santa Maria, and enjoy the privileged views from the top of the hill where it stands. Very close by is Santa María de Besora, where you'll find the necessary services to recharge your batteries before returning to the point where you started the Route.
