This route was planned by komoot.
The trailhead on the north side is generally recommended due to better parking availability. This is a good starting point for your hike.
The trail is generally rated as moderate, but it does feature a steep elevation climb of 735 feet over a short distance. The final half-mile to the summit is particularly strenuous, and even experienced hikers may need to take breaks.
The trail begins as a narrow dirt path with roots and rocks, gradually widening as you ascend. You'll encounter modest switchbacks and wooden footbridges. Closer to the summit, the path becomes steeper and rockier. After reaching the summit, a portion on the southern side turns into a gravel road.
You'll be enveloped in a tranquil forest with tall hemlocks, rhododendrons, and large pines. From the parking area, you can enjoy views of Elkin Creek. The 1,865-foot summit of Wells Knob offers spectacular, though somewhat obscured, views of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains and the Elkin Valley. In late spring, the northern slope features sweet-smelling mountain laurel and a bubbling stream.
While beautiful year-round, winter months offer more expansive views of rolling farmland and the distant Blue Ridge Mountains due to the lack of foliage. Late spring brings mountain laurel blooms.
Yes, the trail is open to both hikers and horseback riders, and dogs are generally welcome. Please ensure your dog is on a leash and you clean up after them.
No, there are no permits or entrance fees required to hike the Wells Knob Trail.
Yes, the Wells Knob Trail is a significant segment of the broader Mountains-to-Sea Trail (MST). Specifically, it is part of the 69-mile Elkin Valley Section (Segment 6) of the MST. The route also passes through sections of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail: Segment 6 and the Mountains-to-Sea Trail.
The route is approximately 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) long and typically takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete, depending on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the scenery.
While parts of the broader Wells Knob Section of the MST can be easy, this specific trail involves a steep climb and is generally rated as moderate. The final half-mile to the summit is quite strenuous, so it might be challenging for very young children or absolute beginners. Hikers should be in good physical condition.
Yes, hikers might spot abandoned structures along the trail, adding a touch of history to the natural surroundings.
