This route takes you through the unique landscape of Nationaal Park Weerribben-Wieden, the largest low peat bog in Northwest Europe. You'll experience a varied environment of marshes, open water, ditches, and peat areas, largely shaped by historical peat cutting. The 'Hoge Land van Vollenhove' section offers a contrast with slightly elevated woods, hedgerows, and meadows, providing different views over De Wieden.
Along the way, you'll pass several notable spots. These include the historic Vollenhove Historic Marina, a scenic Viewpoint Over the Vollenhover Canal, the impressive Den Oldenhof Estate, and the intriguing Toutenburg Castle ruins.
The Weerribben-Wieden is a special habitat for diverse plants and animals. Keep an eye out for otters, which thrive in this watery landscape. You might also spot various bird species and other wetland creatures.
The trail can be enjoyed year-round, but spring and summer offer lush greenery and more active wildlife. Autumn brings beautiful colors to the landscape. Be prepared for potentially wet conditions in any season, especially after rain.
While specific parking details for this exact Komoot tour are not provided, Vollenhove is a good starting point. Look for public parking areas within or on the outskirts of Vollenhove, which is a common access point for the 'Hoge Land' section of the park.
Regulations for dogs can vary within Nationaal Park Weerribben-Wieden. Generally, dogs are allowed on a leash in many areas, but it's always best to check local signage or the park's official website for specific rules regarding this particular route and any sensitive nature areas it might pass through.
No, there are typically no entrance fees or permits required for hiking on the public trails within Nationaal Park Weerribben-Wieden. However, some specific attractions or boat tours within the park might have separate charges.
Yes, this route overlaps with several other well-known paths. You'll find sections that are part of the WaterReijkpad, WNW WaterReijk - Vollenhove - rode route, WNW WaterReijk - St Jansklooster - oranje route, and the LF Zuiderzeeroute - 05 - Lemmer - Kraggenburg, among others.
Given the varied terrain, including potentially wet areas, waterproof hiking boots are highly recommended. Dress in layers suitable for the weather, and bring water, snacks, and sun protection. Binoculars can enhance your wildlife viewing experience.
Vollenhove, being a historic town, offers options for cafes, restaurants, and accommodation. You'll find places to refresh and stay overnight in and around the town, which serves as a convenient base for exploring the area.
This Komoot tour is designed as a loop, starting and ending in the same general area. This allows for a convenient hiking experience without needing to arrange transport back to your starting point.
Beautiful route. Searched for a route that was paved due to the wet conditions in the woods. The donation shop along the way is highly recommended! At the end we walked straight ahead. The original route still goes through the park
Beautiful route of almost 16 km through Vollenhove and St. Jansklooster. Very varied but 98% on paved paths/roads. Cafes/restaurants in Vollenhove and along the way at the Oldenhof. I didn't see anything in St. Jansklooster, but there probably is something. A little outside the village you do pass a tea room.
