The route passes through the 'Sperlingsherberge,' a protected stone quarry with massive Ice Age boulders.
Along the Green Beech Leaf circular hike, you'll encounter several notable features. These include the life-sized mammoth sculpture 'Georg' at the start, the 'Sperlingsherberge' with its Ice Age boulders and a Sundial in Schorfheide-Chorin Geopark, and the Ice Age Gate – Geopark Groß-Ziethen. The Grumsin Beech Forest is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, recognized for its pristine ancient beech stands. Walking through this section offers a unique glimpse into Europe's primeval forests, with towering 'beech hall forests' creating a distinctive, cathedral-like atmosphere.
The hike starts at the Geopark visitor and information center in Groß Ziethen, which typically offers facilities such as restrooms and information. For cafes or pubs, you might find options in Groß Ziethen or nearby towns, but it's advisable to check opening hours in advance.
I would give 3 out 5. You need to walk 2 km through agriculture fields before reaching the forest
From the car park via cobblestones or dirt road into the "Buchenwald Grumsin" World Heritage Site. Along the Great Black Lake and further through the forest. At the end of the forest path is the Geopark. It then goes back over cobblestones or a sandy path.
The nearly 80km drive from the holiday resort of Stechlin/Menz was absolutely worth this hike! Wonderful hiking weather, a balmy 22°C and finally not so miserably humid 😊 A wonderful play of clouds in the sky and a truly impressive landscape 🌳🌲🍂🌿 We met almost no one except for a small family that constantly circled us 😅. No wild boars either, whose tracks were clearly visible everywhere 🐗🐗🐗 For the return trip, we chose the route "through the villages" - which gave us kilometers of cobblestone moguls 😱😱 Instead, we enjoyed delicious peach jam by the roadside and an authentic glimpse into the Brandenburg hinterland. A visit to the Schorfheide is highly recommended!
The information center in Groß Ziehten is a good place to start exploring the Geopark. Small but nice with a lot of information about the formation of the landscape. For us it was shelter between the rain showers today, hence the shortened hike. During the subsequent excursion to the Grumsin beech forest and the adjacent gravel pit, you see the landscape shaped by Ice Age glaciers with different eyes.
