This route was planned by komoot.
The trail is a round trip, so you can start at various points. Popular starting locations often include the castle villages of Neuleiningen, Altleiningen, or Battenberg, where parking is generally available. For public transport, research connections to these villages.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, as it passes through the Palatinate Forest Nature Park, always keep your dog on a leash, especially in forested areas and near wildlife. Be prepared for varied terrain and potential rocky sections that might be challenging for some pets.
The trail is beautiful year-round, but spring (April-May) offers blooming nature, and autumn (September-October) provides stunning fall foliage. Summer can be warm, so an early start is recommended. Winter hiking is possible but requires appropriate gear for potentially icy or snowy conditions, especially on steeper or rocky sections.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Leininger Castle Trail or to enter the Palatinate Forest Nature Park. However, please respect local regulations, stay on marked paths, and practice Leave No Trace principles to preserve the natural environment.
Hikers generally spend about 6 to 6.5 hours to complete the entire 22.6 km (14 miles) route. This duration can vary based on your fitness level, pace, and how often you stop to enjoy the sights.
The trail features a diverse mix of terrain, including natural, unpaved paths, gravel sections, and some paved or asphalt stretches. You'll encounter forest paths, hiking trails, and some village streets. Expect varied ground, including rocky areas and soft grassy sections, requiring sturdy hiking shoes.
The trail connects three historic castles: Altleiningen Castle Ruins, Neuleiningen Castle, and Ruins of Battenberg Castle. You'll also see the Lion Fountain at Neuleiningen Market Square, unique rock formations like the Kamelkopf Rock Formation, and enjoy panoramic views such as the View of Neuleiningen and the Rhine Plain.
Yes, the route aligns with several other trails in sections. Notably, it follows the Leininger Burgenweg for its entire length and also passes through parts of the Westpfalz-Wanderweg Rotes W (Kelten-und-Wein-Wanderweg), Pfälzer Weinsteig - Etappe 2, and the Pfälzerwald Blauer Balken.
Yes, the trail passes through the castle villages of Neuleiningen, Altleiningen, and Battenberg, which offer opportunities for refreshment stops. These villages typically have cafes, pubs, or restaurants where you can refuel during your hike.
This trail is categorized as 'difficult' and requires very good fitness and sure-footedness due to its length and varied terrain. It is generally not recommended for beginners or families with young children looking for an easy stroll. However, shorter sections around the castle villages might be suitable for less experienced hikers.
Consider combining your hike with a visit to the local vineyards. In some sections, the Leininger Castle Trail aligns with the Palatinate Wine Trail, offering an even more attractive variant for those who appreciate both hiking and local wine culture. Also, starting early allows you to enjoy the views and castles before they get too busy.
Long on the to do list and thankfully put on the agenda by my better half. A beautiful autumn round with lots of colorful leaves, fine views, rocks, castles (delicious food in the Bettenburg... pff autocorrect... Battenberg Castle, of course 😅), mushrooms and lots of more or less conspicuous mushroom hunters in the undergrowth...
Today we went to the Leininger Burgenweg with Bettina. Planned for a long time and waiting for the best conditions. That means: sunny, not too hot, no wind, distant view...👌, because the wind can whistle unpleasantly at the heights and in summer you break on the open spaces🥵 So, optimal spring tour! We started on the Battenberg at the castle, because we had actually planned to finish in the beautiful garden of the castle tavern. But since we took longer than expected despite the brisk step and I was invited to a birthday party, it was with a heavy heart that I decided to stop off.😥 As a local, I am familiar with all of the paths and often form part of our bike tours, but I have never hiked the entire tour. There are a lot of beautiful paths, including the Kupferberg with camel's head, the crossing of the Höninger Tal and the route to Altleiningen are among my favorite paths. Further to the Altleininger Castle I showed Bettina my crash site 😂... not one of my favorite points and uphill again on beautiful paths with some rocks below the Nackter Hof to Neuleiningen. There are some rapeseed fields on the heights towards Wattenheim and we passed one directly. Again the optimal tour in terms of time, I thought to myself... you can also praise yourself 😅 Neuleinigen you have to do as a separate tour if you do not know the place. Too many beautiful alleys and city wall path would have gone beyond the scope of our tour. The castle with the view was wonderful and then came the ascent to Battenberg again. I have no idea why I was so exhausted, but I've been up there so many times, but it's never been as exhausting as this time.😝 Especially the way back to Neuleiningen took a lot of time... The narrow panoramic path back to Battenberg Castle is fantastic... I love it. 🥰 It was a wonderful day with you Bettina and I'm looking forward to our next tour together 😘
Today I was out and about in Leininger Land with my wife and a few friends. To be precise, it was the Leininger Burgenweg. From the romantic community of Neuleiningen, the path leads above the Eckbach valley with wonderful views deep and far in the direction of the Nackterhof. A new path has been built on the Sommerberg, which leads idyllically through the mountain slope. Shortly thereafter, there is the possibility of halving the 22.3-kilometer route. The former wine road leads down into the Spechttal and on the opposite side up to the Mittelberg. The path length is then 14.7 kilometers. But back to the overall route. From the Sommerberg, the Leininger Burgenweg leads along the edge of the forest and fields in the direction of Sessenhof. On new paths, hikers can explore bizarre rock formations that are new components of the path. From the Süßenhof you descend into the Amseltal. Paths and a bridge lead to the bottom of the valley and the Tränkwoog, from where the short ascent to Altleiningen Castle begins. The youth hostel's restaurant invites you to a hearty "half-time snack". Strengthened again, you head towards Altleiningen, where you can visit the unique 20-tube fountain. The path leads over the Eckbach to the Zimmerberg and further into the Langental. Then the route runs along the flank of the Kupferberg up to the Kupferbergfelsen with the distinctive federal sandstone formation "Kamelkopf". A path leads to the Bobenheimer Bannwald, which is circumnavigated on a ridge path. At two freely cut places you can look at the Höningen monastery and the Altleiningen castle. In this area, the Palatinate Wine Trail has been placed on the route of the Leininger Burgenweg, as this variant is much more attractive. Via the Mittelberg you reach the Jägerkreuz. You leave the forest on soft grassy paths to reach a grandiose plateau from which you can see the entire Rhine plain. Past a magnificent "Donnersbergblick" and lovely grapevines you reach the village of Battenberg with its medieval church and castle. With a short detour it is possible to marvel at the geologically unique flash tubes. Along the northern edge of the Haardt, the Leininger Burgenweg leads down to Kleinkarlbach and then back to the starting point of Neuleiningen Castle. Finally, you can enjoy the regional delicacies of the Leiningerland in one of the many excellent restaurants.
A great tour that starts in Neuleiningen at large parking lot. Over the snowy and somewhat muddy meadows and forest paths we went to Altleiningen Castle, where a youth hostel with a great outdoor pool is attached. Via Altleiningen we went on great forest paths, past rock faces to Battenberg and the castle there, which allows a great view of the Rhine plain. From there it goes back to Neuleiningen where the nice village backdrop and the castle of the same name await. Great view from the castle on the Rhine plain and the place. A wonderful tour with a lot of variety, which requires average fitness.
The Leininger Burgenweg runs through a diverse landscape and connects the impressive testimonies of the Counts of Leiningen: Burg Altleiningen, Neuleiningen and Battenberg. past a rock formation that looks like a 🐪 camel head! beautiful path absolutely recommendable 👍
Today it finally worked out that Simone and I were able to tackle the Leininger Burgenweg, perfect weather ☀ We started our hike at Battenberg Castle and marched along meadows and through forests towards Mittelberg, where we reached the Jägerkreuz. On smaller paths we circled the Bobenheimer Bannwald on a ridge path and always had wonderful views of Höningen and Altleiningen Castle. On the Kupferkopf we marveled at the distinctive red sandstone formation "Kamelkopf", which lives up to its name. There we also looked for the faces in the rocks and found them 😊 After a delicious picnic that Simone had taken care of - asparagus, ham, wild garlic dip and crispy sticks - we went to Langental along the Eckbach. The next destination was Altleiningen Castle and the village with its 20-tube fountain. Now we continued through blooming, fragrant rape fields to Neuleiningen and the castle there. At the end we had another very idyllic section along the edges of forests and fields to Battenberg. It was a beautiful day and everything went well. Thank you very much for your company, Simone. As always, it was great and your delicious picnic was absolutely great 😋
Unfortunately, we were unable to visit Battenberg Castle as a wedding ceremony was taking place there
Due to the weather, I left my bikes in the garage today and instead preferred to walk down Leininger Burgenweg with "Frank2020". It's super laid out, the markings are easy to see even in the heaviest rain ... 🌧️ 🙄🙂
