This route was planned by komoot.
The main starting point for the trail is the parking lot at the entrance of Dörrenbach village. If you prefer a shorter version of the hike, you can also start from the "Altes Bild" hiking car park.
Yes, the trail is considered family-friendly, partly coinciding with the Brothers Grimm Fairy Tale Trail. It features enchanting "fairy tale stations" with artistic representations of characters like Sleeping Beauty and Hansel and Gretel, which can be engaging for children.
Yes, dogs are generally welcome on the trail. However, it's always recommended to keep your dog on a leash, especially in forested areas and near wildlife, and to clean up after them.
The trail can be enjoyed in various seasons. Spring offers blooming nature, while autumn provides stunning colors from the sweet chestnut and mixed forests. Summer is pleasant, but ensure you carry enough water. Winter hiking is possible, but some paths can be steep and rocky with loose stones, especially when wet or covered with leaves, so exercise caution.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Sleeping Beauty circular trail or to access the Palatinate Forest Nature Park. However, visitors are expected to respect nature, stay on marked paths, and follow general park regulations.
The trail features diverse terrain, including ascending paths and broader forest roads through sweet chestnut and mixed forests. You'll encounter uniquely shaped sandstone rock formations. Be prepared for some sections that can be steep and rocky with loose stones, requiring good fitness and sure-footedness.
The trail offers several notable highlights and panoramic viewpoints. You'll pass through the picturesque village of Dörrenbach itself, with its half-timbered houses and Renaissance town hall. Key viewpoints include the Ruins of Guttenberg Castle, offering expansive views over the Mundatwald and Rhine plain, and the Stäffelsberg Tower, providing comprehensive panoramic views of the Palatinate Forest, Northern Vosges, Rhine Valley, and Northern Black Forest. Don't miss the Hänsel and Gretel Fairy Tale Station and the Gold Donkey Sculpture – Märchenweg Dörrenbach.
Yes, the route shares sections with several other official trails. Notably, it overlaps significantly with the Dornröschen Rundwanderweg, Dörrenbach, and also intersects with parts of the Pfälzer Weinsteig - Etappe 11, Kapellen-Pilgerweg, Saar-Pfalz-Weg, and the Gebrüder Grimm Märchenweg.
The starting and ending point, Dörrenbach village, is known for its charming atmosphere and offers inviting wine taverns where you can find refreshments and local cuisine after your hike.
Yes, while the full route is approximately 13.4 km, a shorter version is available. Starting from the "Altes Bild" hiking car park, this option reduces the distance to about 9.6 km, making it a good alternative if you're looking for a less strenuous or time-consuming hike.
Given the moderate difficulty and varied terrain, it's advisable to wear sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support. Bring sufficient water, especially on warmer days, and snacks. A map or GPS device is recommended, along with weather-appropriate clothing, as conditions can change in the forest. Trekking poles can also be helpful on steeper or rocky sections.
Today I hiked through the Palatinate Forest in wonderful spring weather, sometimes up and then down again, but always good hiking trails and well signposted. And thanks to Komoot I found everything easily and hiked a few highlights 😀🙋♀️
The Westwall Trail was very educational; it was depressing to see how Dörrenbach and the surrounding area suffered back then. You won't notice any of that anymore on the beautifully designed Brothers Grimm Trail or the fantastic view from the Stäffelesberg Tower.
Wonderful to hike - the fairy tale characters are part of the Brothers Grimm Fairy Tale Trail. The last section of the Sleeping Beauty Trail includes a bit of the Fairy Tale Trail. So we saw a few more fairy tales.
Today we were out and about in my hometown—more specifically, in the Palatinate Forest. I'd had my eye on the Sleeping Beauty circular trail for a while, but unfortunately, the last time I tried to hike into the Dörrenbach Forest, there was tree felling going on. Not everything was open today either, but it only affected a small section. In addition to the circular trail, we made a detour to the Guttenberg Castle ruins, the Hohe Derst, and the Stone Table. Overall, a very nice hike! 😊
The award-winning hiking trail number nine “Sleeping Beauty circular hiking trail” was hiked with my son (5 years old). It is a very nice tour with the highlights Bunker Stories, Gutenberg Ruins and Stäffelberg Tower. It is well signposted (Rose). Unfortunately, the bad weather came earlier than expected and brought darkness even earlier than expected, taking into account the time change. That's why we had to skip the Stäffelberg tower at the end because it was pouring rain and it would have been irresponsible to walk the 500 m more with the little man. When the weather is good, the tour is easy to go with small children and is no problem with a dog anyway. Unfortunately we were a bit unlucky today because the heavy rain started too early. But it was still fun and afterwards we had hot chocolate.
Small warm-up on the day of arrival in the Palatinate Forest. For us little ones 👱♂️👱♀️the Sleeping Beauty Path had to serve 🤗 we set off in the picturesque Dörrenbach ... Then to the Frog King🐸, past the old fortified church and the half-timbered town hall to the Sleeping Beauty 👸. From here you leave the place and go to the Palatinate Forest. Station 3 is Snow White 🙎🏻♀️, No. 4 is the Sterntaler ⭐🌟🌠💰. From there we followed the Sleeping Beauty Path on beautiful forest and forest paths on the Hohe Derst 561m. Then briefly to the stone table with Geo Cache and over the Kanzelberg 532m to the Guttenberg ruin 503m, great view 🤗 we continued over the Farrenberg 490m (many destroyed bunkers) to the Großberg 446m. And finally on the Stäffelsberg 480m with observation tower and 360 ° panorama. On the descent we took the last stops from the Brothers Grimm fairy tale trail (Rapunzel, Tischlein Deck Dich and Hansel and Gretel) with us. From here we went back to the car. Nice round for young and old 🤗
My version of the tour is a little longer than the original route. I also walked to the Gutenberg castle ruins. I also took a wrong turn at kilometer 6.45. I should have just continued along the Eulenweg. But since I had a team meeting at the same time, I was probably a little distracted. Nevertheless, business meetings in the forest are much more fun 😂. A beautiful tour that has been in my planning for ages. The path runs almost entirely through the forest. Anyone interested in contemporary witnesses of the Second World War will find what they are looking for here.
