Aaschlucht Gorge

Highlight • Gorge

The floods in 2005 and 2011 destroyed large parts of the hiking trail between Engelberg and Grafenort. In 2007, an interest group was organized under the leadership of district forester Sepp Hurschler with the aim of repairing the badly damaged hiking trail. Today, the adventure trail leads over 7 bridges, 3 of which are suspension bridges.

This “Swiss Family” fire pit is right on the trail and by the river. There is wood, several seating options, a covered picnic area, a fountain, a small wooden bridge, a swing seat and a gigantic view of the mountains.

Crystal-clear Lutersee

Highlight • Lake

The Lutersee is a picturesque mountain lake in the rocky mountains above Engelberg. On calm days, the water is completely calm and the striking peak of the Titlis is reflected on its surface. Just a few minutes from the lake, the Alp Zingel awaits you for a little break with delicious refreshment.

What is the overall difficulty of the Aaschlucht-Lutersee-Engelberg Hiking Tour?

This is a difficult hike, requiring good stamina and technical ability. While the initial section through the Aaschlucht Gorge is relatively easy, the latter part from Ruggisbalm back to Engelberg is more demanding.

Where does the trail start and where can I park?

The tour typically starts in Engelberg. For parking, you'll find options in Engelberg itself. The route is also well-connected by public transport, making it easy to reach the starting point without a car.

Is the Aaschlucht-Lutersee-Engelberg Hiking Tour dog-friendly?

What is the best time of year to hike this route?

The best time to hike this trail is typically from late spring to early autumn (May to October). During these months, the weather is generally favorable, and the paths are clear of snow. The Aaschlucht Gorge section is particularly pleasant on hot days due to its shaded paths along the cool mountain stream.

Are there any permits or entrance fees required for this hike?

No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Aaschlucht-Lutersee-Engelberg Hiking Tour. However, if you choose to use the Buiräbähnli (small cable car) from Mettlen to Ruggisbalm, there will be a fee for that service.

What are the main highlights and points of interest along the way?

You'll experience diverse scenery, including the 'wildly romantic' Aaschlucht Gorge with its suspension bridges and picnic spots. Further along, you'll reach the idyllic Crystal-clear Lutersee. Other notable points include the Widerwällhubel Picnic Area with Stone Table and Fire Pit and the Walking path between Eugenisee and Engelberger Aa.

What is the terrain like on the Aaschlucht-Lutersee-Engelberg Hiking Tour?

The terrain is highly varied. It starts with an easy, shaded path through the Aaschlucht Gorge, featuring forest paths and numerous bridge crossings. After using the Buiräbähnli, the trail continues through meadows and forests, with the section from Ruggisbalm back to Engelberg being more demanding with significant elevation changes.

Does this trail intersect with other well-known paths?

Yes, sections of this route overlap with several other official trails, including the Via Sbrinz, Unterwaldenroute, Nidwaldner Höhenweg, and the Erlebnisweg Aaschlucht.

Are there places to eat or rest along the route?

Yes, there are various picnic spots and barbecue areas, especially along the Aaschlucht Gorge, such as the Widerwällhubel Picnic Area. You'll also find amenities, cafes, and restaurants in Engelberg at the start and end of your journey.

Is it possible to do just a part of the Aaschlucht-Lutersee-Engelberg Hiking Tour?

Absolutely. You can choose to hike just the Aaschlucht Gorge section, which is about 3 km long and suitable for families. Alternatively, you could focus on the first stage of the Buiräbähnli Safari, which includes the scenic ride and a hike to Lutersee.

What is the 'Buiräbähnli' and how does it relate to the hike?
