This route was planned by komoot.
The trail starts near the historic Koutermolen, a wooden corn windmill. While specific parking details aren't provided, it's generally advisable to look for local parking options in Sint-Martens-Latem, close to this landmark.
Hikers generally complete the trail in about 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes, depending on pace and stops. The total distance is approximately 8.6 kilometers.
The terrain is varied, featuring flat, green meadows, sections through residential areas, and earthen paths. A significant part of the trail goes through the Leie Marshes (Latemse Meersen), where you'll find boardwalks (knuppelpad/vlonderpad) through wet grasslands. Sturdy walking shoes or boots are recommended, especially for these potentially wet sections.
Rated as 'moderate', the trail has minimal elevation change. However, due to potentially wet and uneven sections, particularly in the Latemse Meersen, it may be unsuitable for individuals with reduced mobility or families with strollers. It is generally manageable for beginners with appropriate footwear.
The trail offers a blend of natural beauty and artistic heritage. You'll pass by the Saint Martin's Church and Tempelhof, both subjects of the Latem School painters. The Leie Marshes (Latemse Meersen) nature reserve, with its boardwalks and diverse flora, is a natural highlight. You'll also see the Latem Windmill and information boards providing insights into the artists and their historical context.
The trail is generally dog-friendly, but it's always recommended to keep your dog on a leash, especially when passing through nature reserves like the Latemse Meersen or residential areas, to respect wildlife and other hikers.
Spring is particularly vibrant, as the Latemse Meersen nature reserve comes alive with diverse flora. However, the trail can be enjoyed year-round. Be prepared for potentially wet conditions in the grasslands, especially after rain, regardless of the season.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Albijn Van den Abeele Trail or to access the Latemse Meersen nature reserve. It is freely accessible to the public.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Albijn Van Den Abeele Route, GR 128 Vlaanderenroute (hoofdtraject), and the Latemse Meersen Wandelroute, among others.
Given the varied terrain and potentially wet sections in the Latemse Meersen, sturdy waterproof walking shoes or boots are highly recommended. Dress in layers suitable for the weather, and consider bringing water and snacks, as specific facilities on the trail are limited.
While the trail itself focuses on natural and cultural immersion, Sint-Martens-Latem is a charming village. You can find cafes and restaurants in the village center, which is easily accessible from various points along the trail, perfect for a post-hike refreshment.
Albijn Van den Abeele is the ancestor of the artist group that has given Latem so much name and fame. The route starts near the Latem Koutermolen and leads past the characteristic spots that Albijn Van den Abeele, together with his painting colleagues, has repeatedly put on canvas. The route combines past and present, nature and culture in a balanced way. We walked past the places where the painters lived and worked. Numerous sights enrich this walk and we also took a natural bath in the Latemse Meersen. You can find the route on Routen.be. Attention! Signage is missing or incorrect in several places on this route. Do you want to walk this route? Then always download the GPX file as a backup. Sint-Martens-Latem has had the image of an art village in Flanders for almost a hundred years. To tie in with a glorious past, the municipal council took the initiative to place images of contemporary artists at suitable locations. Thus past and present go hand in hand. Poems in public places also pay tribute to poets associated with the municipality. We were lucky that the mill was open today. A visit to the mill is not recommended for people with a fear of heights. So I didn't go up but my wife did. Unfortunately she didn't have a cell phone to take pictures. A very nice walk near Ghent. Combination of art and nature as I like it.
