This route was planned by komoot.
Yes, the Walgau cycle path is widely considered easy and ideal for beginners and families. It features a predominantly flat or gently undulating profile, making it suitable for a relaxed pace. The path mostly consists of asphalted cycle paths or low-traffic farm roads.
The terrain is generally very easy, following the Ill River through the Walgau valley. You'll mostly ride on asphalted cycle paths or quiet farm roads, with gentle inclines and declines. It's designed for comfortable touring cycling.
The route offers varied and picturesque scenery, including riparian forests, expansive meadows, and numerous quarry lakes like Lake Galina and Lake Nachbauer. You'll also pass charming towns and villages, and as you approach Bludenz, you'll get breathtaking views of the Alpine panorama. Notable landmarks include the Ill River Footbridge and the historic Schattenburg Castle in Feldkirch.
Yes, there are two main routes through the Walgau from Bludenz to Frastanz, one largely staying to the right of the Ill River and another closer to the left bank, passing through areas with many quarry lakes. These routes merge at points and then reunite after Frastanz towards Feldkirch. A significant advantage is the flexibility to shorten sections by train, as bicycles can be transported on most regional trains, allowing you to tailor your tour.
Absolutely. The Walgau-Rheintal section provides excellent connections to the wider cycle networks of Switzerland and Liechtenstein, as well as to the international Lake Constance Cycle Path. From Bludenz, you can also connect to the Montafon Cycle Path. Additionally, the route incorporates sections of the Dörfer-Städte Route and the Ill-Rhein Route.
The best time to cycle this path is generally from spring through autumn (April to October). During these months, the weather is usually pleasant for cycling, and the scenery is vibrant. Summer offers warmer temperatures, while spring and autumn provide milder conditions and beautiful colors.
The path can be accessed from various points along its route, with common starting points in Bludenz and Feldkirch. Both towns offer parking facilities. Given the path's integration with public transport, you can also use regional trains to reach different sections, making access flexible.
While dogs are generally welcome on cycle paths in Austria, it's always recommended to keep them on a leash, especially in populated areas, near livestock, or on shared paths. Please ensure your dog is well-behaved and that you clean up after them.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to cycle the Walgau cycle path. It is freely accessible to the public.
Yes, as the path connects charming towns and villages like Bludenz, Ludesch, Thüringen, Bludesch, Schlins, Satteins, Frastanz, and Feldkirch, you'll find numerous opportunities for cafes, restaurants, and accommodation. These towns offer places to rest, refuel, and stay overnight.
The path is described as 'perfect for connoisseurs' because it allows for a leisurely pace to appreciate the scenic and cultural offerings without demanding physical exertion. Its gentle terrain, varied landscapes, historical towns, and excellent connectivity to other routes make it ideal for those who enjoy a relaxed cycling experience focused on enjoyment rather than intense sport.
It rained until noon today. That's why I went to Val Blu in the sauna area 👍. Then we went on the Wallgau circuit to Feldkirch and back. Unfortunately, the recording didn't work, so I stopped the tour planned by Vorarlberg Tourism. The tour was very nice, especially the return trip with the low sun behind us.
Breaking in a new bike🚴♂️🚴♂️ was my plan today 😊 The start of the 🚴♂️ route was in Feldkirch (Komoot only started in Frastanz, so 5km are missing 😥) to Lorüns. Parked the bike here and switched to hiking mode 👞to visit the Rappenkopf above Lorüns. My route went under the railway bridge to the start of the "Diebsschlössleweg" which zigzags steeply upwards. Once you get to the top, you have the option of going left to the Diebsschlössleplateau (Alpine trail - marked blue and white) or continuing to follow the Diebsschlössleweg to the right until you come to a fork in the road. The Diebsschlössleweg leads down to Stalher. The path continues to the right to the Rappenkopf, the Hintere Davenna and the Davennakopf. From this fork in the road, it is not far to the Rappenkopf (approx. 15 minutes), with the last 10 minutes marked as Alpine Sjteig (blue and white). At the summit you are rewarded with a wonderful view. After a short break, I started my way back to the bike parking lot, explored a short section of the path to the Diebsschlössle plateau, but I didn't want to go up there after all 😊 When I arrived at the 🚲, I switched back to bike mode (helmet, cycling gloves, etc.) and pedaled home in a somewhat strong headwind. On the first longer ride with the new 🚴♂️🚲 everything went well 👍😊🚴♂️
Today, I switched from the "winter mode ☃️❄️⛷️" of the past few days to "spring mode 🌻🌼" with a bike & hike 🚲🥾 tour to Lorüns and the Rappenkopf 🤣🌞. I started with the 🚲 "at home" to Schlins to the fishing lakes "Galina", Nachbauer, and the Fliegenfischersee. These lakes never cease to fascinate me 👍. Now it was time to "cycle on" via Nenzing, Thüringen, Nüziders, and Bludenz to Lorüns, always keeping the beautiful mountain panorama, such as the Hochgerach, Hoher Fraßen, and the Rätikon, still partly covered in snow, in view 👀. After 2.5 hours of cycling (not too fast🤣), I switched to hiking mode 🥾 in Lorüns to visit the Rappenkopf again. The "Diebsschlößleweg" zigzags steeply uphill to the fork in the path "Diebsschlößleplateau" and Stallehr/Rappenkopf/Davennakopf. The last section of the trail to the Rappenkopf is marked in blue and white, but Actually, it's not that difficult. Once you reach the Rappenkopf, you have a wonderful view down to Lorüns, out to Bludenz, and into the Montafon with its still snow-covered peaks like the Tschaggunser Mittagsspitze, Golmer Joch, Sulzfluh, etc. It's just so beautiful up there. After my lunch break, my descent was the same as the ascent (steep 🤣). After reaching the 🚲, I switched back to "bike mode" and cycled quickly back to Feldkirch with a slight headwind 🤣🚲. It was a beautiful 💚, somewhat strenuous 🙈 spring tour, but tomorrow it's back to winter ⛷️☃️ P.S.: I'm a "bio bike" rider 🤣
This tour took us on cycle path 2 “Villages – Cities Route” from Bludenz to Feldkirch. At the start the weather wasn't quite right and a fine drizzle was still falling from the navel. But after a short time the weather improved and we arrived in Feldkirch dry. We visited the old town and had something to eat in a nice café. Feldkirch is a fascinating and enchanting old town with romantic arcades and winding streets. For the return journey we chose cycle path 1 “Ill – Rhine Cycle Path” and, when the sun was shining, we headed back towards Bludenz. The route led along the Ill, past Lake Galina, Lake Nachbauer and Lake Tschalenga back to the starting point.
Bike route from Feldkirch to Lorüns and back of my "Bike&Hike🚴♀️🥾 tour to the Rappenkopf in Lorüns 🙂🌞
Small bike & hike tour to Thuringia 🚴♀️🥾👍🌞 After the sun appeared in the early afternoon, I spontaneously decided to visit the Montjola waterfall by bike🚴♀️🚴♀️🚴♀️. Since the weather was very 🌞 in the meantime, the visit to the Montjola pond was also possible. I went up to the pond along the waterfall, circled it and through the "Dark Forest" back to the bike to cycle back to Feldkirch.🚴♀️👍
You have to subtract 210 meters in altitude. End of the 4 days in Vorarlberg. A total of 270 km cycled. The tours were all easy and wonderful in a beautiful landscape.
Since the weather wasn't stable enough for a longer mountain tour today, it became a bike & hike tour to Thuringia to the Montjola waterfall and the Montjola pond. The waterfall currently has enough water 👍 and there was a wonderful atmosphere at the pond again 💚 The ducks 🦆 enjoyed the warming rays of sunshine again after a long time 🌞 and also the peace and quiet at the pond 👍🙂... I am always impressed by the great atmosphere in this beautiful natural gem 💚💚. I always enjoy being up there at this little pond. If you are looking for nature and peace, this is the right place 👍👍💚💚
