The Ommetje Holterberg trail is generally considered to be of moderate difficulty. You'll experience varied terrain, including forests, open heathlands, and sandy paths. The area is characterized by its unique hilly landscape, which provides a dynamic hiking experience with noticeable elevation changes, though the paths are mostly accessible and well-maintained.
The trail offers several notable features. You'll pass by the Trail to Holterberg, leading to the Holterberg Viewpoint, which offers panoramic vistas. Another poignant stop is the Holten Canadian Cemetery. You can also enjoy the beautiful Heather Fields of De Sallandse Heuvelrug and find a convenient break at Lunchroom Buitengewoon Holten.
Yes, the National Park Sallandse Heuvelrug generally allows dogs, but they must be kept on a leash to protect the wildlife and natural environment. Always ensure your dog is under control and clean up after them.
The trail is beautiful year-round, but it's particularly picturesque when the heathlands are in bloom, typically from mid-August. Clear days offer the best views from the Holterberg Viewpoint, where you might even spot the church tower of Deventer.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Ommetje Holterberg trail within the National Park Sallandse Heuvelrug. However, please respect the park's regulations, such as staying on marked paths and keeping dogs on a leash.

Yes, this route shares sections with several other trails. Notably, it covers 92% of the WNW Twente - Holterberg/Dagrecreatieterrein - gele route, and also intersects with parts of the WNW Twente Dagrecr. H'berg - oranje route, the WNW Twente - Holterberg/Dagrecreatieterrein - groene route, and even a portion of the long-distance Pieterpad deel 1 - 11.
Yes, you'll find Lunchroom Buitengewoon Holten conveniently located along the route. It offers a place to eat, a terrace, and an ice cream corner, making it a great spot for a break. Restroom facilities are typically available at such establishments.
From the Holterberg Viewpoint, you can enjoy extensive panoramic vistas of the surrounding area. On clear days, it's even possible to spot the church tower of Deventer in the distance. The viewpoint also features a steel 'wind vane' indicating directions and distances to various places.
Given its moderate difficulty and mostly accessible paths, the Ommetje Holterberg trail can be suitable for families. The varied scenery, points of interest like the Holten Canadian Cemetery, and the option for a break at Lunchroom Buitengewoon Holten (which also has miniature golf) can make it an engaging experience for children, provided they are accustomed to hiking for nearly two hours.
It was time for another walk with my friend from Enschede. She likes to choose a walk that's easily accessible by public transport and not too far for me by car. We chose Holterberg, near the Sallandse Heuvelrug. A beautiful area with a wide variety of walks. Wilma had picked a lovely one. It included some climbing and descending, and plenty of benches along the way for breaks. It passed the Canadian cemetery, which is very well-maintained. The garden was beautiful. And we were incredibly lucky with the weather, of course.
Nice easy walk along the Canadian war graves 🙏 and a fantastic view from the Holterberg 🤩 In the period August - September extra beautiful because of the flowering heather
Beautiful walk on the unsurpassed beautiful Sallandse Heuvelrug, but I would walk it in the opposite direction if I did it again. Then you come to the Canadian cemetery at the end. That is quite impressive. And it goes on and on. Beautiful that in such a modest quiet place the butterflies keep fluttering around. For me a bit like a sign of fragile hope.
The first part is on wide sandy roads, you can adjust it if you look at the route. The 2nd from the lookout point is much nicer.
