The trail primarily features paved surfaces, suitable for road cycling. However, it's not always a continuous dedicated path. You'll encounter a mix of off-road paved sections, shared pathways along US 1, and bike lanes on US 1. Some older sections might have roots affecting the pavement, and a few areas, particularly in the Upper Keys and Key West, may involve unpaved sections, residential roads, or sidewalks. Some sections are also described as "backcountry dirt trail" which may require a permit.
The difficulty varies. Many sections are relaxing and traffic-free, especially on dedicated paved paths and historic bridges. However, some segments require caution, as you might share narrow shoulders with vehicles on US 1. Riding over long bridges, like the Seven Mile Bridge, means cycling in bike lanes adjacent to high-speed traffic with no shelter from the elements. Strong cyclists might complete the entire length in two days, but most should plan for at least three days.
The trail offers stunning panoramic ocean views, especially from the historic bridges. You'll pass diverse Florida Keys landscapes, including gumbo limbo trees, thick mangroves, and beautiful beaches. Popular scenic areas include Key Largo, Grassy Key, and the Saddlebunch Keys. Keep an eye out for wildlife such as egrets, pelicans, and even dolphins. The trail also provides access to several National Wildlife Refuges and State Parks.
Yes, the trail is segmented, allowing for shorter, more manageable rides. For a relaxing experience, consider sections in Key Largo, Grassy Key, or along the Long Key Bridge. These areas often offer dedicated paved paths. More experienced cyclists comfortable with sharing the road and riding alongside traffic might tackle the longer bridge crossings or sections where the trail merges with US 1.
A major highlight is cycling across the 23 historic Flagler Railroad bridges, many of which have been retrofitted for cyclists and offer incredible ocean views. You'll also pass by Long Key State Park and can enjoy the unique experience of the Old Overseas Highway sections. The trail also provides access to various state parks and natural attractions.
Yes, the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail forms the southernmost portion of the 3,000-mile East Coast Greenway. It also covers 100% of the (Florida) trail.
The best time to cycle is generally during the cooler, drier months, typically from late fall through spring (November to April). Summers can be very hot and humid, with a higher chance of rain and tropical storms. Always check the weather forecast before you go.
Parking is available at various access points along the trail, often near state parks, public beaches, or designated trailheads. Specific parking availability can vary by location, so it's advisable to check local park websites or trail maps for the section you plan to visit.
Generally, dogs are allowed on the paved sections of the trail, but they must be kept on a leash. However, specific rules may vary in state parks or protected areas along the route. Always check the regulations for any particular park or refuge you plan to enter with your dog.
Cycling the main paved sections of the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail typically does not require a permit or entrance fee. However, if you plan to enter state parks or specific natural areas along the route, such as Long Key State Park, there may be entrance fees or specific regulations. Some "backcountry dirt trail" sections might also require permits. The trail is within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, but this does not typically require a permit for cycling on the trail itself.
Given the Florida Keys climate, it's essential to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and bug spray. A helmet is highly recommended for all cyclists and required for those 16 and younger. Consider bringing snacks, a basic bike repair kit, and a charged phone. Depending on the section, you might also want a camera for the scenic views.
The biggest tornillo u can imagine just went through the side of rear tire and at the base , so 2 holes . Puse el tube and it worked out for the remaining 22 miles but just at 70 psi . More than that and tube wanted to get out. The punture was at high speed probably going 23 mph. Overall the tour was amazing and im glad i got to know this area . Bike lane everywhere and cars kept distance this time . Will be back for more sections soon.
