The starting point for this circular trail is conveniently accessible. You can reach Spitz on the Danube by public transport. Specific parking information is usually available locally, but the trail's accessibility by public transport makes it easy to start your hike without a car.
The trail primarily winds through extensive vineyards, including the Rieden Achspoint, Hochrain, and Pluris. You'll encounter thick loess layers and bedrock of paragneiss, which contribute to warm, light, and well-draining sandy soils. Some vineyard sections are terraced, and while generally well-maintained, the varying slopes, some dropping steeply by up to 50%, require careful footing and a good basic fitness level.
You'll pass through the picturesque vineyards of the Wachau Valley, offering magnificent views of the Danube River and the historic parish church of Spitz on the Danube. A significant highlight is the Red Gate, a historical remnant providing fantastic panoramic views over Spitz, the Tausendeimerberg hill, and the Danube.
While the trail itself is generally accessible, specific regulations for dogs in the vineyards or protected areas should be observed. It's always best to keep dogs on a leash, especially when passing through vineyards or near wildlife, and to carry waste bags.
The trail is beautiful throughout many seasons. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and stunning scenery, with blooming vines in spring and vibrant colors during the grape harvest in autumn. Summer can be warm, so an early start is recommended. Winter hiking is possible, but check local conditions for ice or snow, especially on steeper vineyard paths.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Spitz and Weinberg Ried Achspoint circular trail. As part of the UNESCO-listed Wachau Valley, the area is freely accessible for hikers to enjoy its natural and cultural heritage.
Given its 'moderate' difficulty rating, varying slopes, and sections with steep drops, the trail is best suited for families with older children who have a good basic fitness level and are sure-footed. Younger children might find some sections challenging. Always assess your family's capabilities before embarking on the hike.
Yes, the route intersects with several other trails. You'll find sections that are part of the Rotes Tor Rundwanderung (72%), Buchberg Rundwanderung (57%), Welterbesteig Wachau Etappe 4 (34%), and Welterbesteig Wachau Etappe 3 (31%), among others. This offers opportunities to extend your hike or explore different parts of the region.
Yes, the trail starts and ends in Spitz on the Danube, a charming settlement known for its viticulture. You'll find various amenities there, including cafes, restaurants, and traditional 'Heurigen' (wine taverns) where you can enjoy local wines and cuisine after your hike.
The trail winds directly through active vineyards, some of which are terraced or have slopes dropping steeply. Stay on marked paths to protect the vines and ensure your safety. The soil, rich in loess and paragneiss, can be loose in places, so wear appropriate hiking footwear for good grip. Enjoy the immersive experience of walking through these renowned wine-growing areas.
A nice round trip starting from the beautiful Wachau town of Spitz with its lovely alleys. Up at 32°. The cooling forest🌳 is very good and gives you energy. The hiking trail inspires both young and old with its very nicely designed forest spirit stations. We felt like we were the only ones who dared to climb the hill above the Danube valley in the heat. ☀️ But it was worth it ☺️
The hike leads from the church square in Spitz up to the legendary "Red Gate", a relic of an old defensive wall. Nice overview of the village of Spitz and the Danube and the vineyards! A wonderful hike in every season!
