Hiking

This dream trail offers an impressive combination of adventurous paths, steep rock faces, expansive fields, and breathtaking views. The starting point is at the Pyrmont Mill with its rushing waterfalls. A varied trail leads uphill and downhill through forests and meadows to the Elzbach stream.

Along the way, you'll have the opportunity to stop and enjoy the views at viewpoints, such as the summit cross on the Sammetzkopf. Following the stream, you'll pass the impressive cliffs of the Teufelskammer and finally reach the medieval Pyrmont Castle. The rest of the circular route takes you past rock formations and ivy-covered caves, along a valley path, back to the starting point.

A tour organized by the Rhine-Moselle-Eifel Tourist Board.

Sammetzkopf Summit and Panoramic View of Maifeld

Highlight • Summit

Those exploring the dream trail "Pyrmonter Felsensteig" will reach the highest point of the route on the Sammetzkopf. There, an illuminated summit cross stands prominently, even in the dark. From the Sammetzkopf, an impressive view opens up: It stretches as far as Münstermaifeld with its magnificent collegiate church and further to the volcanoes of the Eastern Eifel. The wide panoramic view over the plateau forms a fascinating yet harmonious contrast to the narrow paths in the Elz Valley.

September 20, 2024, 🇩🇪 Gruppenwanderung Elzwasserfall – Burg Pyrmont, Mühle Pyrmont

1st tour of the hiking weekend with the group, past Pyrmont Castle, Pyrmont Mill and Elz Waterfall.

Translated by Google

This morning, after not having walked for over a week, we threw our backpacks, hiking boots and good mood in our Koukleum-mobile and drove towards Burg Pyrmont to do a 12 kilometer walk there. 🥾🇩🇪 This walk was really cool and is one of the nicer walks we have done recently. 😍

With the excellent autumn weather, @Bonnie24 and I decided to hike the Pyrmonter Felsensteig dream trail today. From October onwards, if you want to stop at the mill after the tour, it is recommended from Fri.-Sun. to hike, as the mill is open all day on these days. The Pyrmont and Eltz castles don't open again until May 1st, so the crowds stay away from these hiking trails in autumn or winter. The path starts at the Pyrmonter Mühle parking lot, near the rushing waterfalls. The path briefly follows the county road until, after crossing it, it ends in a quiet forest path. Lined with magnificent gorse and hedges, a soft grass path leads to a small wood before winding through extensive fields. The high cross on Sammetzkopf soon appears visible from afar, surrounded by yellow rapeseed fields in spring. From there you have a fantastic panoramic view of the region. A soft dirt path leads to the nearby nature reserve on Juckelberg, which contains true natural treasures such as gnarled forests and magnificently blooming gorse hedges. Today we took a break at the Hauerhütte before the path goes up and down, always offering wonderful views, until we finally reach the Elzbach. Through a magnificent alder forest, the path follows every bend in the river and passes the impressive cliffs of the Devil's Chamber. It's not far from the natural idyll of the Elztal to the medieval Pyrmont Castle. We continue on a wonderful path into the "kingdom of rocks" with ivy-covered caves and steep cliffs. Then we descend to the Elz valley with fabulous views of the castle. The waterfall and the Pyrmont mill are finally reached again via a valley path, where the circular path ends. So much for the description of the dream path. Pyrmont Castle: Pyrmont Castle was mentioned for the first time in 1225. The keep, which is more than 800 years old, still dominates the entire complex today. Three major eras of European cultural history are reflected in today's castle. Growing out of the slate rock and retaining castle walls and towers to this day, the core of the old kitchen with the dark “dining vault”... Castles have long been considered unfashionable. That's why the barons of Waldbott-Bassenheim decided to convert Pyrmont into a castle. The large windows with their picturesque views of the Eifel landscape still bear witness to this today. In a time that places old and new in stark contrast to each other, the architects Prof. Helmut Hentrich and Dipl. Ing. Hubert Petschnigg decide to harmoniously combine the eras. An architectural masterpiece is created. The 13th century castle was rebuilt between 1963 and 1967 by the architects Prof. Hentrich and Senator Petschnigg. For several decades it served as a think tank and guest house for the renowned architectural firm HPP in Düsseldorf. It is still a meeting place today – in the spirit of the architects. In the Elzbach valley the paths were quite muddy. The rain of the last few weeks has also caused the Elzbach to rise. Today I really liked the beautiful views and the autumnal atmosphere in the forest and of course the sun early in the morning. The conclusion in the mill was absolutely perfect. Thank you, dear @Bonnie24, for hiking this not easy but very beautiful dream path with me. I thought it was really nice to hike together again.

The first dream path of the weekend is done. The path starts and ends at the Pyrmonter Mühle on predominantly fantastic paths. In addition to great views and forest and fields, the eponymous Pyrmont Castle is a special highlight of the tour. An absolute recommendation. 🏞⛰️🌞🥾

Our tour on the "Traumpfad Pyrmonter Felsensteig", also awarded "Hiking Trail of the Year 2015", was a wonderful nature experience. The entrance to this premium hiking trail started from a parking lot near the idyllic Pyrmont Mill. This historic half-timbered mill, nestled in a dreamlike setting of waterfalls and a pond, later offered a fairytale-like conclusion. First, we walked along wonderful field paths through a meadow landscape with numerous blooming rapeseed fields. The bright yellow fields stretched to the horizon, contrasted by the lush green of the meadows and the blue and white tones of the sky. At the summit of the route, we reached one of the tour's essential highlights: the Sammetzkopf with its imposing "summit cross". This point is not only the highest on the hike but also a place with breathtaking panoramic views. From here, we could look far over the high plateau with its blooming rapeseed fields, spot the collegiate church of Münstermaifeld, and even discover the distant volcanic cones of the Vulkaneifel. When looking from the Sammetzkopf across the high plateau during the blooming season of the rapeseed fields, it feels like standing before a radiant sea of gold. On the way to the "Teufelskammer", the path led along the Elzbach river, where great paths and lush vegetation underscored the beauty of this section of the landscape. Unfortunately, the "Teufelskammer" did not prove to be another highlight, as the view from the rocky spur onto the meandering Elz was obscured by dense undergrowth. Finally, we approached Pyrmont Castle, which majestically towers over the landscape. The over 800-year-old complex impressed with its massive keep, which dominates the entire castle. After about two kilometers, we reached the Pyrmont Mill again, which is unfortunately closed at the moment and will likely not be accessible in the long term. The nearby parking lot finally marked the end of the hike.

Pymont Rock Trail The trail started at the Pymont Mill, from where you can also see Pymont Castle. It climbs past the three crosses erected in thanksgiving for surviving the Thirty Years' War. Narrow paths lead through faded broom and beautiful fields of poppies, cornflowers, chamomile, and faded rapeseed. It leads to the Allebaun shrine and the Stations of the Cross. From the Sammerzkof, you have a wonderful panoramic view. It leads through enchanted paths past the Hell on the Elzbach stream, up and down stairs to Pyrmont Castle, which has a café and is open on Sundays. The final stop is the Elzbach waterfall, with a view of the Pymont Mill and castle. A beautiful tour.

A really beautiful dream loop, especially when the broom and rapeseed are in bloom. The end at the Pyrmont Mill was not only delicious but also extremely relaxing thanks to the sound of the waterfall.
