Cycling

The Traisental Cycle Path is a true highlight in the Mostviertel region – perfect for a relaxing bike ride through diverse landscapes! From the Danube to the upper Traisental, you'll cycle mostly on smooth asphalt. The route is ideal for leisurely cyclists – you can cruise along at a leisurely pace while enjoying the beautiful scenery.

The Traisental wine region is particularly attractive in the first few kilometers of the tour. Between St. Pölten, Tulln, and Krems, you'll find rolling hills, idyllic cellar lanes, and sunny vineyards – proof that the Mostviertel region also produces fine wines. Further along the Traisen River, you'll be treated to magnificent views of floodplain landscapes and well-maintained cycle paths.

It gets a little more demanding from Kernhof, where a sporting challenge awaits you: the climb to Gscheid is short but tough – four kilometers with inclines and curves. After that, the route continues at a moderate pace, with beautiful uphill and downhill sections. The final meters before Mariazell will challenge you once again on the Kreuzberg.

If you prefer a more leisurely pace or are traveling with your family, you can easily shorten individual stages by bus or train. And for the return journey, there's the idyllic Mariazell Railway – making your tour a relaxing and eventful experience!

Traisental cycle path between Traismauer and St. Pölten

Highlight • Cycleway

The Traisen Valley Cycle Path runs from the Danube near Traismauer to Mariazell. The section between Traismauer and St. Pölten is just over 20 kilometers long and is considered a particularly family-friendly route, as it is largely flat and well-maintained. The route mostly runs directly along the Traisen River and through tranquil, scenic floodplain landscapes. Especially in the lower reaches, there are many renaturalized riverbanks that provide habitats for rare bird species, fish, and beavers. The route is also suitable for beginners and families.

View of Ochsenburg Castle

Highlight • Castle

Ochsenburg Castle stands on a roughly 30-meter-high rocky outcrop on the right bank of the Traisen River. The medieval castle of the Ochsenburg family was rebuilt into a Renaissance-style palace during the 16th century. In 1785, the newly established Diocese of St. Pölten was granted the right to use it. During World War II, the castle was used as a military hospital and subsequently fell into disrepair. Since its renovation, it has served as a summer residence for the bishops of St. Pölten.

In 2010, it was announced that the Diocese of St. Pölten was putting Ochsenburg Castle up for sale for approximately three million euros. Because no buyer had been found by mid-2011, it was announced that the castle was being renovated and could now be rented for celebrations. The castle and the estate located immediately to the east are listed as historical monuments.

The Wuchteln are terrific - both in scope and taste.
And the other dishes on the menu are huge too. It takes a bit of strategy to accommodate all of this. :-)

Trail Reviews

Karsten Beschoner
July 29, 2021, Von Mariazell nach St. Pölten

The best way to get there is with the Mariazeller Bahn from St. Pölten (Himmelstreppe). MAKE A RESERVATION IN THE HIGH SEASON. There are only limited spaces for bicycles.

Horrible rainy weather in Mariazell yesterday; This morning when we started cycling, impressive wafts of fog and then only the most amazing sunshine 😊. A very nice tour, in a beautiful landscape along the Traisen. We cycled to St. Pölten and took the train home.

By car 🚗 to St.Pölten, on with the Ötscherbär to Mariazell and by bike back to St.Pölten

Day 2 of the bike trip took me back to St. Pölten via the Traisental cycle path. First, downhill over a few bends, then into Walstern, unfortunately the Wuchtelwirtin was closed (or thank God, as it turned out later), then to Gscheid, where I had a lunch break. After that, you ride downhill almost constantly, at first even very steeply, then on the old railway line to St. Ägyd, further via Freiland to Lilienfeld. I could already feel the thunder behind me... Nevertheless, I stopped in Lilienfeld for a drink. I decided not to wait, but continued on to Traisen, always with the rumble of thunder behind me. It was only from Wilhelmsburg that it was quiet and - thanks to my timing - I had escaped the thunderstorm. Unfortunately, the Traisental cycle path near St. Pölten is closed due to the Frequency festival, which caused a bit of discontent among the cyclists. There is a diversion, however. Thanks to komoot I also arrived at the train station, as I'm not very familiar with the area. An ice cream sundae in the pedestrian zone was the reward for the effort. A lovely tour, thank goodness I caught the perfect time each time...

Today we first went by train to St. Pölten, from there by bike tramper bus to Geschaid and on the Traisentalweg back to Traismauer. ATTENTION the trailer at the bus only has 20 seats.
