Along the Stellingwerven and through Drents-Friese Wold National Park

In the east of Friesland you will find De Stellingwerfs, a region where Lower Saxon Stellingwarfs is spoken. The route starts and ends in Noordwolde, where a completely different dialect is spoken, colonial. Can you recognize the different dialects during this almost 77 kilometer long bike ride?

Besides the fact that the region you are cycling through today is very interesting from a linguistic point of view, the area is also characterized by impressive nature. At the start you cycle on narrow paths through the forest and through the quiet countryside, and then you cross the Drents-Friese Wold National Park. In this unique nature reserve you will find forest, heathland and drifting sand. Climb to the top of the Bosberg Tower for a breathtaking view of the national park.

The last part of the cycle tour takes you through the Tjongervallei, the green area around the Tjonger river. In the past, the river was used for peat shipping, but nowadays you mainly see many pleasure boats passing by. In Stellingwarfs the Tjonger is also called the Kuunder. Well, then you already speak one word in the local dialect.
