You will follow in the footsteps of the eternal ice with this wonderful tour to the Schellenberg Ice Cave. Along the way, you will not only find magnificent views and magical nature, but also a rustic place to stop for a rest. You start at a bus stop just outside the town of Marktschellenberg. A beautiful old sunken road leads steadily uphill through a sparse beech forest. Then a narrow path takes over. You will soon reach the tree line and the wonderful views begin. A few switchbacks and you will be at the Toni Lenz Hut, which is also called the Ice Cave Hut due to its proximity to the ice cave. You can stop for a rest straight away or after you have looked at the ice cave. Either way, the same path will lead you back to the starting point.

Went on a hike to the Toni Lenz Hut with friends. We had also planned to visit the Schellenberg Ice Cave, but unfortunately we didn't have enough time. Well, maybe another time. It was a lovely trip and the weather was perfect too 🌞
Rain was reported for today, light rain in the morning and a lot of rain in the afternoon, so we chose a tour that can also be done in the rain. None of us have been to the Schellenberger Ice Cave before, so it was interesting for everyone, but we didn't know the way either. The first half is a gravel hiking trail and later it is an alpine trail, the last part to the ice cave is secured with a rope, but this is not necessary. The cave is not very big, it basically consists of one room. The tour still lasts an hour, during which a lot is said about how people used to get into the cave and what you could see in the past. The whole hike is easy to do, but you have to be sure-footed and not afraid of heights.
A great tour, but also with sniff-sniff ... We were lucky for the tour at 3:00 p.m. ... no one else was there, so we had a special tour. Everything was fun and that's why we recommend the tour.
Marktschellenberg, Toni Lenz Hütte, Schellenberger Ice Cave and back
The Toni-Lenz-Hütte is located at an altitude of 1,438 meters on the southeast slope of the Untersberg massif. It is named after Toni Lenz, the long-time innkeeper, who co-founded the cave association for exploring the Schellenberger ice cave, which is by the way the largest ice cave in Germany. The hut was built as a base for the development of the cave. You can continue from the hut to the ice cave, or via the Mittagsscharte to the Salzburger Hochthron and the Untersberg cable car. I've never done this before because I always had respect for the midday slit. Even today I only hiked as far as the small Heubergkopf. Of course there was also something to eat, a large spinach dumpling at the Toni-Lenz-Hütte. Since on German soil, you don't need a test, but an ffp2 mask😷 to order through the window🙄.
PP was at the pass tower near the Austrian border. Passing the tower, it's already uphill in the direction of the Toni Lenz Hütte. The first half of the hiking trail is well developed and then turns into the alpine hiking trail. We strengthened ourselves at the Toni Lenz Hütte before continuing to our destination for today, the Schellenberger Ice Cave. The tour through the ice cave is guided and a lot is explained. The cave is very impressive and worth a visit. It also took us three attempts before it worked today. After visiting the cave we went back to the hut. There we were able to see how the hut is supplied by helicopter. It also takes a while as the helicopter 🚁 brought and took away several loads. Very spectacular to experience something like this live. The pilot had fun too and flew into the valley just above the trees and bushes on his last take-off. You don't always experience it. A lot was offered for us today 🙂😊
A trip with the family, the hike took a little longer than Komoot automatically recorded.
Today we went over the Untersberg. Okay, up with the 🚠, but then it was a great, strenuous hike with many highlights. The GPS was a bit crazy on the Thomas Eder Steig and the Schellenberger Eishöhle cave 😉, but you shouldn't expect too much in the rocks 🤣.
