Mining Tour

The Ruhr area is riddled with holes like a gigantic foxhole, and the mines are the traces of these centuries-long underground activities that are still visible from afar. For everyone in the Ruhr area, the silhouettes of the mine towers are a piece of home. This tour in the Essen city area takes you to some of the most impressive testimonies of this cultural history.

Your journey through time starts in front of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zollverein Coal Mine. First, you go in a loop around Katernberg. On your way, you can admire two architectural traces of industrial history that are typical of the Ruhr area: shaft 4/5/11 of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zollverein Coal Mine and the nearby Hegemannshof miners' settlement.

After that, you can enjoy the romance of the Rhine-Herne Canal, because in the Ruhr area, the canals are not just waterways, but also local recreation areas. Heading back south, you circle the slag heap of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zollverein Coal Mine. The slag heaps shape the landscape and are now mostly green oases.

A long loop in the west of the city takes you back to your starting point, where you can finally explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex.

Zollverein Colliery Shafts 4/5/11 (UNESCO World Heritage Site)

Highlight • Historical Site

Where the Triple Z - ZukunftsZentrum Zollverein - and other companies are located today in Essen, there used to be the site of the UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex with shafts 4/5/11. The Nordsterntrasse runs right through this area. On the Triple Z side, all that is left to see is a manhole cover from shaft 5, and on the other side of the cycle path on a company site are the Protego covers from shafts 4 & 11.

Zollverein Coking Plant

Highlight • Monument

Like the neighboring Zollverein colliery, the former coking plant has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. Here you can learn about industrial history, visit the factory swimming pool and even go ice skating in winter. Where high-quality coke was once produced, there is now a café and restaurant with a beer garden.
