Lepe and Exbury loop — New Forest National Park

Cycling

Starting at Lepe Country Park with great views across the Solent, this tour offers splendid sea views, open countryside, and a visit to Exbury Gardens, home to the world-famous Rothschild Collection of rare trees and shrubs.

The route provides an easy ride on dry summer days. As nearly half of the route is off-road, keep in mind that the bridleways can become muddy and more challenging in wet conditions, in which case a mountain bike would be necessary.

Lepe Coastal Road

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

This is one of the only sections of road in the New Forest which runs right next to the sea. It's a fabulous stretch of cycling with Lepe Beach at the eastern end.

You can access the beach directly from the road, where there's a pleasant sandy section to stop. The car park next to the beach is part of Lepe Country Park and benefits from a cafe with sea views.

Exbury Gardens

Highlight • Trail

Exbury Gardens is famous for the Rothschild Collection of rhododendrons, azaleas, and camellias, plus rare trees and shrubs. The gardens are a riot of colour in spring, an oasis of tranquillity in summer and put on a tremendous autumnal show as the leaves turn golden. The gardens are a great place to visit with myriad paths to explore, a miniature steam railway line, an adventure play area, and tea rooms.

Burnthays Copse to East Hill Farm Path

Highlight (Segment) • Forest

This is an enchanting and green stretch of double-track between Burnthays Copse (west) and East Hill Farm (east), with surrounding views of woodland and peaceful fields.

Be aware that east of the farm, the route continues along a grassy bridleway for about 600m that can be muddy in damp conditions, more likely MTB territory.
