Hiking

The Woldingham Countryside Walk is a gorgeous loop that starts and ends at Woldingham Station. A mosaic of chalk grassland, hidden valleys and wildflower-rich woodland makes this a treat for nature lovers, while there’s also the option of a detour to see St Agatha’s Church with its 900-year-old ash tree. Wear decent hiking footwear – some of the woodland sections can be muddy.

From Woldingham Station, it doesn't take long before you’re ambling peacefully along paths and bridleways, enjoying the pockets of woodland and valley views. You pass through the Marden Park Estate, founded in the 17th century by Robert Clayton, the Lord Mayor of London. Today, the manor house is an independent girls’ school.

After Horse Chestnut Avenue, you join the North Downs Way through Marden Park Woods, which are an utter delight in springtime. Keep your eyes peeled for roe deer, while you might even spot the graceful form of a red kite in the sky.

Follow the North Downs Way for a stretch, before venturing back towards Woldingham through Great Church Wood. This is where you have the option of a detour to St Agatha’s Church, which dates back to at least 1270. It’s thought to be both the highest and smallest church in Surrey and, as well as its ancient ash tree, there’s a centuries-old yew tree on its south side.

Beyond this, you follow Church Road, which takes you back to the station.

Marden Park Estate

Highlight • Natural

The Marden Park Estate was founded during the 17th century by Sir Robert Clayton, then Lord Mayor of London. The impressive manor house, rebuilt in the 1880s, is now Woldingham School, an independent girls' boarding and day school. The estate is set in delightful Surrey countryside.

This stretch of the North Downs Way takes you through Marden Park Woods. The mix of woodland, scrub and chalk grassland give rise to various wildflowers in the summer months, such as primroses and violets. Keep your eyes peeled for purple emperor butterflies, roe and fallow deer, and the unmistakable majesty of red kites in the skies above.

Great Church Wood

Highlight • Viewpoint

Great Church Wood is part of Marden Park and is close to St Agatha's Church, one of the smallest in Surrey. It is especially wonderful here in the spring when bluebells carpet the woodland floor.

A nice walk to stretch my legs, I'd recommend taking a slight detour and visiting St. Agatha's Church.

Great walk! Nice shady spots all along the way - perfect for a hot sunny day. When you finish up at Woldingham station continue along the road for about 10 minutes to find a lovely little cafe (the Dene coffee shop) where you can treat yourself to a cream tea.
