Hiking

The exquisite Tillingbourne Valley, Blackheath Common and the attractive villages of Blackheath and Shere provide the highlights of this ramble between Chilworth and Gomshall.

From Chilworth Station, you venture south to Blackheath village, one of Surrey’s smallest and most isolated. It occupies a gorgeous location on Blackheath Common, a 250-acre (100 ha) expanse of sandy heath and woodland. You continue east across the Common, before arcing northeast back towards the Tillingbourne Valley.

The achingly pretty village of Shere was famously the setting (along with Los Angeles) for the popular romcom The Holiday. With its attractive church, idyllic lanes and impressive houses, it’s easy to see why it was chosen and is regarded by many as Surrey’s prettiest village. You may be tempted to stop for refreshments and soak it all in.

After Shere, it’s not far to the end point at Gomshall Station. Gomshall is another delightful village with some fine riverside establishments, including the Gomshall Mill, an 11th-century mill that’s now a beautiful pub.

Sam Jones
December 30, 2024, Waymarking the Chilworth to Gomshall Rail to Ramble route

Trying to waymark this route before it got too dark to see...and failed! Lovely wander along tracks I'd not visited before - a real backbone for planning future walks (and rides) in the area!
