Saint-Jean-de-Luz to Sare cycle route

Cycling

This route allows you to discover the new Rhune cycle route, from the Atlantic coast to the Pyrenean foothills. The loop starts from Saint-Jean-de-Luz and its emblematic bay and then reaches Sare, labeled “Most Beautiful Village in France”.

You quickly discover the fishing port of Saint-Jean-de-Luz. It is the largest tuna port in France. Hake and anchovy are also other fishing specialties from this port. From the Chantaco district, a first section of four kilometers of greenway takes you to Ascain. This village with its typical architecture is lively with numerous games of Basque pelota on the fronton.

At the exit of Ascain, you then attack the climb to the Col de Saint-Ignace via a second portion of two-kilometer greenway. At the top, an inn allows you to enjoy a nice break before continuing. If your schedule allows it, you can also take the little train there to discover the summit of Rhune.

Otherwise, a pleasant descent leads to the picturesque village of Sare, nestled at the foot of the Rhune. We advise you to take a gourmet break to regain your strength before returning: the Basque cake is the traditional and emblematic pastry of the region.
