Gravel riding

What could be more quixotic than riding your bicycle along the gravel tracks that cross the La Mancha plain between Campo de Criptana and El Toboso? The Route that we propose shares a section with the complete route of the Don Quixote Route.

This tour takes you into the landscape of Cervantes' work, and takes you through an extensive steppe of reddish earth covered by a collage of olive groves, vineyards and other crops such as almonds or cereals. In addition, you pass through locations where you can contemplate the traditional white four-blade windmills that in the mind of the ingenious gentleman become giants. And, if that were not enough, you pass through typical towns in La Mancha, which have a traditional configuration, apart from the possibility of tasting local products.

The adventure is circular from Campo de Criptana, where you can reach by train or by road. The distance of the journey is affordable, even more so if you take into account that you only ascend 300 meters. For this reason, the route does not represent any technical or physical difficulty, so a good gravel bike is enough to ride with guarantees. The roads of La Mancha are perfect for pedaling on the dry days of spring and autumn. Remember to bring supplies and spare parts for any eventuality and your photographic device on hand.

Campo de Criptana Windmills

Highlight • Monument

These iconic mills are symbols of Campo de Criptana and all of Castilla-La Mancha. Its blades preside over the life of the town of La Mancha from above. The mills are of the “tower” type, built in masonry and whitewashed with lime. They have a circular plan pierced with small windows, which served as a guide for the orientation of the wind. This indicated where to turn the conical cover so that its blades could take advantage of the wind as desired. Each mill has three floors: the upper one with the grinding stones and the lower ones for storage and packaging.
The oldest mills, such as the Sardinero, Burleta and Infante, have been standing since the 16th century and preserve their original mechanism. There are also more modern mills, such as the Inca Garcilaso, the Cariari, the Vicente Huidobro, the Pilón, the Lagarto, the Culebro and the Poyatos, which date back to 1900. Currently, some of these mills can be visited, such as the Molino Infante, the Burleta, the Culebro (which houses the Sara Montiel Museum), the Quimera (which houses the town's Holy Week Museum) and the Poyatos Mill (current tourist information point). The others are closed to the public.
I hope you enjoy exploring these iconic windmills! 😊

El Toboso

Highlight • Settlement

It can be said that the town of El Toboso is already recognized worldwide and its fame is due to the fact that according to the famous Cervantine work, "Dulcinea" lived here or better known as Aldonza Lorenzo, who was the lady of Don Quixote.
The town is very picturesque and its history not only revolves around the famous Quixote, it has also been of great importance in the history of Spain, being the place where the battle of Navas de Tolosa was fought in 1212 and later it will form part of the domain of the Order of Santiago.
Undoubtedly a town worth visiting with the whole family.
