Hiking

The Rinconada Canyon Trail runs through Petroglyph National Monument, one of the largest petroglyph sites in the USA. Here you can see up to 300 petroglyphs. The motifs of the stone carvings come from different eras, some were carved into the volcanic rock over 700 years ago. The starting point of the tour is at a hiking parking lot on the western outskirts of Albuquerque.

The petroglyphs are valuable testimonies of cultural expression and have a deep spiritual meaning for the Native Americans. In addition to human figures, you can mostly see animals, and there are also geometric shapes such as spirals and stars. At first the images were carved into the rock with a stone, later hammers and chisels were used.

The short circular route gives you a great insight into history and is ideal for stretching your legs during a road trip in the impressive landscape.

3.54 km long loop trail. There should be up to 300 petroglyphs to see, unfortunately they are not as easy to see as on the Piedras Marcadas Trail. A nice loop, not far from the city.
