Untouched nature, moss heaths, half-timbered houses - this tour is for anyone who wants to cycle far away from civilization. The start and end point is the train station in Hövelhof, which is why you can easily travel from other areas with your bike in your luggage.

In Hövelhof you first pass the local history center. Here you can find out about the way of life of the ancestors in the Senne in an exhibition and demonstration area of over 1000 square meters. The tour continues on quiet roads and cycle paths through the middle of the green. Just after half of the tour you reach the Steinhorst Basin. It is considered the largest reserve in NRW that was specifically planned and created for nature conservation. From a viewing tower you have a good view of the waters and fields and with a bit of luck you will see rare water and wading birds that are native here. The Brinkmeier farm café in the immediate vicinity is ideal for a rest, as there are not many places to stop along the route. On parts of the Paderborner Land Route and the EmsRadweg you cycle with a slight climb towards Moosheide. This idyllic nature reserve extends over 400 hectares between the districts of Gütersloh and Paderborn. In the summer months you might be lucky and come across the Senner wild horses in their paddock.

The last few kilometers back to the starting point are slightly downhill. Due to the route length of 57 kilometers and slight climbs, this tour is suitable for all motivated cycling fans with good fitness. Have fun on this eventful
trip through nature in Hövelhof and the surrounding area.

The Steinhorst Basin is an absolute must-see for any nature lover. This biotope is the largest man-made biotope of its kind in North Rhine-Westphalia and provides a wonderful habitat for countless animals. The 36-hectare basin attracts wading birds, water birds, and migratory birds. The adjacent wetland is home to other animals, including amphibians. To avoid disturbing the native bird population, you are only allowed to walk around the area; direct entry into the Steinhorst Basin is prohibited.

A quick tip: There's a viewing platform on the northern edge of the reserve – from here you can peek into the reserve and enjoy the magnificent view.

The Senner horse is one of the oldest known horse breeds in Germany. In summer, with a bit of luck, you can watch the Senner horses here 🐎. Also very interesting for children.

Moosheide Heathland

Highlight • Natural

Proof of the beauty of nature is the Moosheide nature reserve. The wet meadows, pine forests and the headwaters of the Ems on the eastern edge of the reserve are a real highlight in the region. With a little luck, you can see many animals here. At dusk you can see fallow deer, roe deer and wild boar. An eye-catcher are also the wide meadows in the wet grassland. When they are in bloom, they provide an unforgettable picture.

The bike tour leads through the Senne landscape near Hövelhof. Highlights include the Ems springs in the Moosheide nature reserve, the heather that is currently in bloom, and the Steinhorst Basin nature reserve. The Soviet War Cemetery and the Heidschnucken sheep farm are not included in the original tour, but are worth a visit.

A very nice tour; being back in our home territory also holds surprises! We saw Santa Claus 🎅, followed the Ems River, and discovered and used some cool refreshment stations! 😉 A little ice cream is a must 🤭
