This circular hike from Masserberg to the Werraquelle is a lovely family experience. Rest stops and playgrounds make the route varied. But there is also plenty of room to immerse yourself in nature.

After just a few meters of the hike, there is an adventure playground hidden in the forest…

Highlight • River

If you want to visit the Werraquelle, you strangely have two options. There are two Werraquelle in the Thuringian Forest: the rear spring near Siegmundsburg and the front spring here …

The view is magnificent - and so is the opportunity (except on Mondays) to have a meal right next door. Everything from roasts, cakes and beer to coffee is available.

Trail Reviews

Small, very beautiful Thuringian forest round, start in the fog in Masserberg. On soft forest paths we hiked to the Werraquelle, the only true one (some say that, others that way). Made me want to do the Werra cycle path right away! The stop there is recommended 😋. Backwards we are on the observation tower Rennsteigwarte on Eselsberg and have been rewarded with a great view and sun. At the end we really enjoyed the sunset over the Gleichberge and the Rhön in the Auenland. Splendid!! THURINGIA 🤩

We started our tour in fog, but then the sun gradually came through. It was a very beautiful hiking trail along the Rennsteig and also through a beautiful forest. The Werraquelle is recommended. From the tower building we had a beautiful view of Thuringia. It was a great experience for our grandchildren.

A very nice hike, especially for small children. At the beginning and end you can head to the lovingly designed adventure playground. There is a lot to discover at the Werraquelle and you can cool off by the water. The Eselsberg also offers another opportunity to stop for a bite to eat and also has a small playground. The only downside is the poor condition of the forest... The adventure playground is in full sun and you walk more or less across open spaces to the Heidehütte. From the looks of parts of the forest, it looks like there will be more felling there in the coming weeks.
