Starting from the Reschen Pass, right on the Italian-Austrian border, you drive to Lake Reschen. This is known for the church tower rising out of the water, which you can get very close to on the bike path along the east bank. The sight is bizarre, as is the reason for the postcard motif: the Romanesque church and the village of Graun were flooded to create the reservoir.

Past the smaller Haidersee you roll down into the town of Burgeis with the Fürstenburg. If you don't mind a few extra meters in altitude, then it's worth climbing up to Marienberg Monastery. With a view of the Ortler, the highest mountain in South Tyrol, you follow the route to Glurns, the smallest town in South Tyrol. Discover the church of Glurns, the Tauferer Tower, the Malser Tor and the Schludernser Tor. The idyllic Prader ponds halfway along the route are perfect for a break.

If you then drive through the Prader Sand, you may feel like you have been transported to the Wild West due to the barren landscape. After Prad am Stilfser Joch, a wonderful section awaits you along the Etsch past Lasa to Naturns, your destination. You can visit impressive palaces and castles in Goldrain, Kastelbell, Juval and Schluderns.

Bell Tower of Curon in Lake Resia

Highlight • Monument

The church tower of the village of Alt-Graun, which sunk when the lake was dammed, is an impressive photo motif at any time of the year.

The second lake after Reschen. Fantastic landscape. The Via Claudia Augusta should be on every biker’s list. Anyone holidaying in Vinschgau can now rent bikes. Then there is the option of taking the shuttle bike bus to Lake Reschen. Then back from there. Excellently signposted.

Fürstenburg Castle (Burgeis)

Highlight • Castle

The medieval complex of the Fürstenburg in Burgeis was built by Bishop Konrad of Chur in the 13th century. Some modifications were made in the 16th and 17th centuries. The mighty keep with a wall thickness of three meters is particularly worth seeing. Together with the surrounding fort and stronghold, it forms the oldest part of the building stock.
In 1996 the tower collapsed and the director at the time, Georg Flora, then expanded it. Today, the Fürstenburg houses a technical school for agriculture and forestry.

Historic Old Town Glurns / Glorenza

View of Kastelbell Castle

Highlight • Castle

First documented in 1238, Castelbello Castle dominates the Venosta Valley from a rocky outcrop on the left bank of the Adige River. From the cycle path, it is clearly visible above several apple orchards.

St. Proculus

Highlight • Religious Site

From the outside, the Prokulus Church is rather inconspicuous, but inside you can marvel at a rare art treasure: The frescoes from the 8th century are among the most important wall paintings in Europe. Opposite is the associated Prokulus Museum. You can find all information at merano-suedtirol.it/de/st-prokulus-kirche-museum.html.

Trail Reviews

Bernd und Karin
September 28, 2021, Radtour Reschensee - Plaus 28.09.2021 17:50

The weather really cooperated and so after a shuttle bus transfer that was already wonderful for us flatland Tyroleans, we went on one of the most beautiful bike tours in South Tyrol. It started at Lake Reschen and with a few stops back to Plaus. Z. B. Glurns, with its complete city wall and the old buildings, was very popular. The ice cream also tasted very good. 🍦 We can only recommend this tour.

We rode from Nauders to Naturns today, it was mostly downhill, but we had a very strong headwind. There was a lot to see on the way, some of which can be seen in the photos. The cycle paths are mostly well developed, there are only a few sections as split paths.

From Lake Reschen to Naturno An easy route, steadily downhill, through the lush green orchards of the Vinschgau. You can already see the first tiny fruits on the trees. The cycle path is well marked throughout, mostly on tarred or paved agricultural paths. To the right and left of the valley there are castles and fortresses, steep slopes and snow-capped mountain peaks in the background. Very beautiful to look at and relaxing, despite riding in a group of 25 cyclists. Unfortunately it is a bit difficult to take photos 🥴

We set off from Nauders in slightly cool temperatures. From the height of Glurns/Schluderns it got warmer again. This time we decided to go to the west bank of Lake Reschen. The route does have a few meters more elevation and you can only see the tourist hotspot "church tower of Altgraun" from a distance, but the route is fantastically beautiful and away from the traffic. The highlight of the trip along the Etsch is the part to Lass. It is impressive to see how wildly the Etsch flows down the valley here. The rest of the route after that, once you have left the apple orchards behind you, is like a cycle highway, with the sound of the Etsch always in your ears. The weather and lighting conditions could have been better for photos.

On the Etschtal cycle path to Rabland (just before Merano). Late summer warmth. By midday I wanted to ride in a T-shirt :-) Well-developed cycle path. The direction was right too (downhill :-) The first snow on the heights. The apple harvest in the valley.

This morning we went up to the Reschen Pass and then on a rapid descent along the Etsch river on superbly developed and very well-signposted cycle paths to our accommodation in Nauders, which is located relatively high above the town 😊

Hello folks Various information about this beautiful bike tour, i.e. 1-day stage from Nauders to Naturns, is in my collection Via Claudia Augusta - From Nauders to Riva del Garda 09/03/2023 - 09/08/2023. For me, this is one of the most beautiful parts of the bike tour. Even though the Reschen Pass still requires a bit of a climb and the western shore of Lake Reschen is a constant up and down, the descent along the Etsch is indescribably beautiful and the brakes are used to the extreme. A wonderful day of descent.
